Muirden College was established by Mr William Muirden in July 1900. He believed that a school should offer general educational subjects

as well as vocational subjects. The College grew quickly and from 1912 had over 500 students annually. Since 1950 over 30,000 students have enrolled, attesting to the good teaching and personal attention Muirden College has provided. Muirden Today

The College is quite different to other secondary schools. Opportunity and freedom are two features students experience while studying with us. We do not have uniforms, and students are expected to share responsibility for their learning with their teachers. It is a much more informal environment than a ‘traditional’ school, but with academic study being the primary focus. Students are encouraged to set and strive for their own personal goals, regardless of their social or cultural background. They are helped by a team of highly qualified, specialist teachers. Teachers work closely with students creating a nurturing, relaxed environment, offering one-on-one support when needed. Small classes enable a degree of flexibility in the teaching of curriculum allowing teachers to respond to the needs of students on an individual level. This supportive and cooperative atmosphere, along with the lesson structure, helps students to make the transition between school and university.

Updated and sharing again for 2026!
Tarnia x

Hello everyone,

My name is Tarnia Riggs. Back in 2015, I stepped into the role of coordinator and administrator for this page, representing the long and quietly remarkable legacy of Muirden Senior College.

Muirden College was established by William Muirden in July 1900. That places the school well over a century old now — generations of students passing through those front doors on King William Street, each with their own stories, friendships, and turning points.

When I first took on the page in 2015, it had 172 followers. Over the years, it has grown steadily, quietly, and organically:

May 2015: 172
April 2016: 286
March 2018: 315
September 2020: 331
November 2022: 334
January 2026: 355

Not explosive growth — but meaningful, and reflective of a community that reconnects when the timing feels right.

Muirden College was unique in its era and, in many ways, still is. Situated in the CBD, it was known for its small class sizes and for being the only co-educational, non-religious private school of its time. It was also ahead of the curve academically — offering practical, real-world business subjects such as business studies, Pitman script, shorthand, and typing, rather than the more traditional home economics or technical studies. That forward-thinking approach shaped many independent, capable graduates.

If you’re a former student, you’re warmly encouraged to join and quietly help build the community by sharing the page with others who once attended. There’s no pressure to participate — but if you feel inclined, you’re welcome to introduce yourself, share which years you were at the college, reconnect with old friends, or post a memory from your time there.

And if you happen to have any photos — from then or now — please feel free to share them. Seeing faces and moments from different decades adds a special layer to this space. I’m still searching for my own.

Thank you for being part of the Muirden story.

Love and light

Happy New Year 2026 to everyone in the Muirden Senior College Alumni community.

It’s hard to believe how quickly time moves. As we step into a new year, it felt like the right moment to pause, reconnect, and send good wishes to those who once shared the same classrooms, corridors, and moments that shaped us.

2026 offers a fresh page — a chance to look forward with clarity, perspective, and optimism, while carrying the lessons that brought us here. Wherever life has taken you since Muirden, I hope this year brings good health, meaningful moments, and a sense of ease.

Wishing you and your loved ones a year filled with stability, growth, and quiet wins — and time to enjoy the simple things, whether that’s summer walks, beach air, or just a slower pace.

Let's grow the community by adding at least one or two people from the school. Write done in the comments below!

Warm wishes for the year ahead.

Love and light
