South Australians, what do you think? π€π
Labor has a pre-election promise to provide principals the power to hire teachers and fire poor performing ones at their school in a plan to improve the quality of teaching in South Australian classrooms.
π» Listen here: https://ab.co/3jluLiB
SA Labor Leader Peter Malinauskas told ABC's Ali Clarke and David Bevan it will allow Principals to also hire teachers that are currently on contract-to-contract and an appraisal system for Principals to work with teachers.
βAfter extensive consultation in our schools, especially the public system, we have found out principals would like the ability to have more control over the people who work in their schools.β
βItβs not just about the power to hire and fire poor performing teachers, we want to actually change the system as it currently exists looking also over contract teachers. A lot of teachers are living contract-to-contract and Principals want to give them permanency, but they canβt because of the system.β
SA teachers union boss, Lara Goulding, says the proposal has missed the mark.
βIt misses the point, if Labor really cared about improving outcomes for kids, they would ensure every kid in every school has the support they need to be successful.β
"It's simple bad policy to wait for the pointy end of underperformance to take action, the resources are misplaced in this policy announcement."
βWe will be consulting with our members and look at alternatives as this is not the answer.β
