Education Resource Highlight: Monet to Matisse

Introducing Max Beckmann

Artist Max Beckmann was born in Germany in 1884 and was one of the most important German painters of the twentieth century. Beckmann frequently depicted figures in motion such as athletes, circus performers, and crowded urban scenes to represent conflict, endurance, and survival.

For the classroom:
Make a moving paper character using split pins to create movement. This character could be inspired by your favourite athlete or performer. Decorate your figure's costume or uniform using bold colour and pattern. Join your figure's limbs together using split pins.

Take a series of photographs exploring a range of movements with your character. Use these photographs to create an animation. You could pair up with another student in the class and see how your figures can perform together.

Little marks, big connections.

Students at Kilkenny Primary School recently explored the work of Pitjantjatjara artist and Ngangkari (traditional healer) Betty Muffler, responding to themes of connection, healing, Country and community.
Drawing inspiration from Betty Muffler's use of line, pattern and movement, students created their own collaborative work of art that reflected what connection means in their own lives. Through mark-making and shared creativity, individual contributions came together to form one striking collective work, demonstrating how personal stories can build meaningful connections.

Planning a school visit to Monet to Matisse: Defying Tradition? Now is the time to book!

There are still opportunities for schools to visit the exhibition through to Term 4, Week 4, but availability for guided visits is now extremely limited.

Schools can continue to experience the exhibition through:
✅ Timed exhibition entry
✅ Self-guided learning using AGSA's curriculum-linked resources
✅ A Studio workshop (subject to availability)

To ensure an enjoyable experience for all visitors, school tickets are allocated at specific entry times. Timed entry helps manage visitor numbers within the exhibition and provides students with the best possible opportunity to engage with the artworks.

Whether you're exploring Impressionism, colour theory, artistic innovation or visual arts practice, Monet to Matisse offers an unforgettable learning experience for students of all ages.

A huge thank you to the students, teachers and schools who have visited Monet to Matisse: Defying Tradition already this term through AGSA's Transport Subsidy program.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors and Exhibition Luminaries, students from across South Australia have been able to experience world-class artworks firsthand, regardless of distance or transport barriers. The subsidy program provides assistance with travel costs and complimentary exhibition entry, helping more young people connect with art, ideas and creativity.
