34 years ago, on this day, we formally began Workright Australia (now GEM College of International Business).
6 months earlier, Roy Allen Brake had heard some statistics on the radio regarding the effects that the "restructure of manufacturing" was having on the City of Noarlunga, where he was a pastor. Roy, a former shearer, said "Luceille, these are my sheep, this is my paddock! We need to set up training to help these people." So, it began. It spread from Noarlunga, to Port Adelaide, Para Hills, Salisbury, Modbury, Tea Tree Gully, Renmark, Whyalla - upskilling retrenched men.

In 2 years, we submitted Australia's first nationally recognised training set against competency standards in OHS/WHS, Training and Assessment, Management, Training and Safety Management and Entrepreneurship. We provided accredited forklift training, Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Substances, Confined Space Entry, Domestic, Residential and Commercial Cleaning. As the need dictated we developed Introduction to Trades courses, including mechanics, carpentry, paving and landscaping and tiling.

Our core team included great "People people", who really cared about their learners: Phil and Karen Banks, Karen and Chris Pitman, Merrill and Ron Farnell. Our Board consisted of Roy and Eleanor Brake, Elisa and Phil Colak, John Outhred and me.

Here we are 34 years later - we've been able to make a difference in the lives of thousands of men and women, family businesses, schools and local governments, national and global corporates.

"Workright/GEM training" has been delivered in China, South Africa and Nigeria - and through YOU choosing GEM, we have been able to provide support to Tabitha Project through Faith Ministry Pakistan, Safe Haven Community Center & Children's Home, Payatas Family of Christ Church and the phenomenal work that Pastor Alfredo Millamena does amongst the very poor.

We've also assisted in equipping national leaders from across Europe, in conjunction with ICI Europe and in the Philippines, working with Bishop Efraim Tendero through ICI Asia.

We've only just begun! It's pretty much a given, that I won't be here in another 34 years - but someone will be!

Workright Australia will continue fulfilling its mission, which has never changed "to assist individuals and corporations towards achieving their highest potential and help make Australia the safest place in the world to work"(and GEM's mission is the same, but ends "help make the world a safer place to work")

This is Ben Dankaka from Nigeria. He has now GEM School of Business which will be a licensed campus of GEM College.

Ben is inspirational. His NGO works mostly in the north - he started with the Readers are Leaders Club amongst schools. Then began implementing STEM for girls.
