How wonderful to see this recognition of Distinguished Professor Susan M. Scott, alumni of the Kathleen Lumley College.

The Foundations extends our heartiest congratulations to Professor Scott on being awarded the 2026 Harrie Massey Medal and Prize, one of Australian physics’ most prestigious honours, for her ground breaking discoveries in the fields of general relativity, cosmology and gravitational wave science, and for her leading role in Australia’s participation in the first detection of gravitational waves.

Furthermore, Professor Scott is only the second female to have received this honour in its 36 year history, paving the way for more women in STEM 👏

Only one week until applications close for the Lumley Prize, which recognises the achievements of early career post-doctoral researchers employed by Flinders University or Adelaide University whose research aligns with up to three of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and can demonstrate how their research contributes to social, cultural, economic and/or environmental equity in the Asia-Pacific region.

There are four Lumley Prize awards, totalling $50,000 in value, that will be granted to successful applicants across Adelaide University and Flinders University on a merit basis.

The Lumley Prize program and applications are being administered by Flinders University and Adelaide University, with current employees able to access the Lumley Prize information, eligibility and application process via their respective University intranet.

Applications close 4 September 2026 - for more information, to check eligibility, and to apply please check your staff intranet and/or contact your employer University.

We have been fortunate to have had the warm and generous support of Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, Governor of South Australia of South Australia as Patron of the Kathleen Lumley Foundation over the last year. Her Excellency’s patronage reflects the Governor’s passion for South Australia and her decades-long commitment to advancing Australia’s role in the Asia-Pacific region. We recently wrote to Her Excellency to express our gratitude for her wonderful support of our Foundation and her extensive service to the South Australian community, and to send our best wishes for her future endeavours as she completes her term as Governor in October.

In addition to the Westpac Research Fellowship Program that we posted about a couple of weeks ago (EOIs for that are now open), the Westpac Future Leaders Scholarship Program is also now open for applications!

The Westpac Future Leaders Scholarship is all about supporting everyday people with big ideas looking to pursue postgraduate research or coursework in areas related to sustainable futures, innovation, social change or Asia-Pacific leadership.

Future Leaders Scholars receive funding for their postgraduate study and living expenses, gain access to leadership and mentorship programs, have the opportunity to undertake overseas travel and participate in networking experiences with like-minded individuals, senior business leaders and industry-based experts.

Scholars must be intending to commence a postgraduate degree at one of our nine partner universities across Australia.
