Pianophonics

Pianophonics Pianophonics is a new, simple and intuitive method of teaching piano developed by Mark Freer The result was something totally new. All succeeded.

Pianophonics is a quantum leap forward for piano teaching, just as the Kodaly method was for classroom music. Pianophonics imparts the basics in a virtually foolproof way, with the note-reading, rhythm, technique and motivation all coordinated in a simple and intuitive new synthesis. I'm Mark Freer, a concert pianist, teacher and composer based in Adelaide, Australia. I spent nearly two decades dr

awing up, testing and discarding one draft after another in my quest for ‘the perfect piano course’. Finally, through 2009, I wrote the Pianophonics Primer for around 30 primary school beginners. Every student learned to read music at the piano, fluently and with perfect rhythm. Some ran along this pathway as fast as they could. Others, including sufferers from autism, Downs Syndrome and Aspergers, took it at a gentler pace. Since the publication of Pianophonics Primer, hundreds of users world-wide are replicating this success.

It's good to have the new Pianophonics page up and running. Over time I'd like to see it become a significant go-to place for piano teaching ideas. The central focus is the Pianophonics method - basically a total re-think of beginner piano - which you can find more about (and even buy :) here:

But (to misquote The Castle) let's start with the general before moving on to the more specific... this excerpt from the notes to Pianophonics 1st ed., giving something of a rationale for learning piano in the first place:

"Music is ultimately a sublime conversation à trois, between harmony, rhythm and melody.Think of the harmony as enveloped in mystery, like the celestial music of the spheres, all but inaudible to earthly ears. Like the depths of the ocean, harmony in its self-contained purity is beyond our grasp. It is where those depths come to meet us, where they generate the rhythmic lapping of waves on the shore, that they communicate themselves. Through rhythm, harmony steps from eternity into time; through rhythm, harmony makes itself audible. If harmony is remote in its self-sufficiency, rhythm brings it as close to us as our beating hearts. And if the loving eternal harmony begets the patient all-bearing rhythm, then the childlike singing melody proceeds from them both, flying freely where it will. Melody contains both elements of rhythm and elements of harmony—one can trace her parentage—but she is a unique child with her own distinct personality."

A unique piano tutorial system from Australia that works like a typing course. Learn to read piano music step by step: totally new, totally traditional, totally foolproof.
