๐Sheep Club students attended the PIRSA Sheep Industry Field Day on Friday 12th June 2026 with approximately 200 delegates attending including primary producers, stud breeders, industry trades representatives, researchers, scientists, and biosecurity officers.
The Merino Sire Evaluation program was the focus of the day which is a national program where stud breeders enter their sires into a breeding program, and the progeny are evaluated on several traits which form the Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVโs). In additional to showcasing the animals, there were presentations on different research trials currently underway at the Turretfield Research Centre.
The organisers of the field day invited Urrbrae students to provide a fundraising BBQ lunch, all proceeds from this activity will be allocated to the sheep club activities at Urrbrae. Thanks to the students and staff who attended and provided such a great BBQ to the participants and great promotion for Urrbrae, we have already been invited to attend next yearโs event! ๐

Ms Breeding's Year 7 Science students and the Year 11 Native Animals class had the privilege of hearing from renowned wildlife ecologist Dr David Peacock, who generously gave his time to share his expertise with our students.
Dr Peacock spoke about his pioneering work reintroducing the Western Quoll to the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park and explained the vital role that apex predators play in maintaining healthy ecosystems and controlling introduced species. His engaging presentation provided students with real-world insights into rewards and complexities of wildlife conservation, giving students a deeper understanding of the realities faced by conservation scientists.
The visit perfectly complemented our Year 7 Science project, where students are researching the roles of apex predators and keystone species within ecosystems, as well as exploring food webs and trophic pyramids. Hearing directly from a scientist and Senior University Lecturer actively involved in conservation helped bring these concepts to life!
