Unlocking Safe Driving Together

19/11/2025

Dear Community,

Three years ago I stepped away from teaching and imagined running a β€œnice little part-time driving school with supporting online course.” Seems the part-time aspect went astray. The universe had other plans and very quickly turned that into a 6-month waitlist! πŸš™πŸ˜„

It has been an incredible privilege to support so many young people on their journey to becoming safe, confident drivers. Every milestone, every lesson, every proud moment has meant the world to me. My journey as a driving instructor began in 1984, so I have many wonderful memories.

As I move through my 60s, I’m planning the next chapter of lifeβ€”one with a little more tai chi, music, flying, family time, community, and, ideally, a calendar guided by good flying weather rather than test bookings. ✨

With that in mind, I’ve decided to sell my business in 2026.

If you know someone interested in becoming a driving instructor, please feel free to reach out. I would love to mentor the right person into a rewarding, successful business and ensure our community continues to receive high-quality driver training.

Thank you to everyone who’s been part of this journey so far.
Here’s to new horizons and exciting adventures ahead! πŸŒΏπŸš™βœ¨

β€” Avril

Adelaide is a-buzz with cyclists from all over the world for the Tour Down Under bike race. It's a colourful event, great for the community economically and socially. Motorists will need to make adjustments to travel times where necessary.

Hamish McDonald is from Te Marua in New Zealand. He is following the race with thousands of other cyclists. I couldn't resist sharing a photo of his lycra message.

Remember to keep a safe distance when passing cyclists. At 60km hour, 1m is law but ask yourself this... if the cyclist ahead hits a stone or pot hole and falls off, will I drive over them at my current speed and road position? If yes, give them the space they need to be safe!

Let's make sure everyone gets home safe!

Meetings over. My office for an hour on a perfect Victor Harbor day.

Regional research into accelerated learning potential of the My Driving Online's digital driver training course Start Right | Stay Safe is underway, taking me further afield than usual. Feels like a micro holiday πŸ‘ŒπŸŒ²πŸ˜ƒ

We welcome PC Elliott to My Driving Online's Start Right | Stay Safe team.

In a brief phone interview this afternoon he talked of the importance of road users being aware that children have tunnel vision and little understanding of danger. He asks that we are all on the look out for children riding, skating, scooting and boarding on their new Christmas presents near or on the road. He thinks parents have probably told them not to do this but children don't always listen, and some are adept escapees.

Thanks PC Elliott, we couldn't agree more. Let's always keep children's safety in mind when using the roads.

Merry Christmas .

Ps, if you know where to find PC Elliott's uniform and helmet we would appreciate the heads up. πŸŽ…

Congratulations to Hayley on earning her Certificate of Competency just in time for Christmas! Hayley has a mature attitude to driving that will help keep her and others safe. Hayley supplemented her practical lessons with the online Start Right | Stay Safe driver traning course. Well done and all the best πŸ‘πŸš™πŸ₯°πŸ†

Thoughts leading into Xmas and New Year period. Remember, we are only ever as good a driver as our last decision. We are all human and make errors. Driving defensively and calmly anticipating the errors of other road users helps us protect ourselves and others. We've been subject to some aggressive driving behaviours during lessons on the lead up to Christmas. How you feel shows up behind the wheel, and there are increasing number of stressed people behind the wheel. We all get better at recognising aggression in drivers and their tendency for erratic moves. Improve your chance at remaining safe and getting to your destination without undue stress by giving yourself and offending drivers ample space wherever possible. Stay calm and don't engage in any drama or name calling. Just keep your safe distance and be alert to potential danger. Look after your own mental state and never drive when in a heightened emotional state. Your safety and everyone elses depends on it.

Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday season! πŸ€—πŸš™πŸŽ‰πŸ₯°

Congratulations Cooper! πŸŽ‰πŸ‘πŸš™πŸ† A safe, competent, legal and confident drive this morning resulting in a well deserved Certificate of Competency. Wishing you a lifelong safe driving career.

Cooper found that regular practice was best to help develop his driving skills. Good advice for all learners. Driving safely involves more than practical skills, it takes road awareness, hazard identification, forward planning, anticipating potential problems, and choosing the best path to navigate hazards safely and legally. Applying a proven system for safe driving develops the habits of a competent driver. πŸ‘ŒπŸ˜ƒ
