Last week we read Caleb Azusa Nelsonโ€™s Open Water๐Ÿ’ง The poetic language was used successfully in portraying emotions and intimacy in a way that makes the reader feel it too ๐ŸŒท Open water examines the experiences of two Black-British South-Londoners as they fall in love ๐Ÿ’Œ, whilst covering themes including the relationship with the police ๐Ÿ“ธ Open water has so many good quotes, our favourite being โ€œโ€ฆwhat continues to pull you back?โ€ We also learnt about some members hatred of toast ๐Ÿž

What are some works that continue to pull you back?

Last week we read Just Between Us written and illustrated by Adeline Kon โ›ธ๏ธ The graphics are gorgeous, the enemies to friends was well written and satisfying ๐Ÿ’Œ We had lots of fun discussing this one! We did struggle staying on topic, talking about (mostly) related topics. As well as discussing the themes of sexuality, and pressure on athletes, we also touch on other sport anime, the popularity of sport romances and what sports would make good romance stories. Let us know what other sports do you think would make good romance books?

July was our classics month! We joined Holly Golightly in 1943 New York for Breakfast at Tiffanyโ€™s by Truman Capote and watched the corresponding movie ๐Ÿฆ‹. We joined Sethe as she faced the rememory of being a former slave residing in 124 for Beloved by Toni Morrison ๐Ÿ“š. Likewise we watched the movie adaptation. ๐ŸŽฌ

To finish off the month we held our Christmas in July event, Bookmas, in collaboration with Books and Banter Book Club ๐ŸŽ„. We had lots of fun with classics in July and hope to see you in August for romance ๐Ÿ’Œ
