We're thrilled to announce that our own Professor Peter Vamplew and Associate Professor Cameron Foale from the Centre for Smart Analytics (CSA) have been awarded $127,000 in funding from Founders Pledge, a UK-based charitable initiative. This grant will support their research into multi-objective reinforcement learning to enhance the safety of advanced AI systems.
This project is a collaborative effort with the Australian Responsible Autonomous Agents Collective, including experts from Federation University, Deakin University, and the University of New South Wales. Their work focuses on training AI to balance multiple objectives, ensuring solutions that are not only effective but also safe and ethical.
As Professor Vamplew puts it, "If you're training a self-driving car, you want it to be quick, safe, and efficient. Overlooking any one factor can lead to serious issues. Our goal is to develop AI that can make balanced decisions across all necessary objectives."
This funding will help employ a research assistant to tackle initial challenges, laying the foundation for more complex AI safety solutions. Weβre immensely proud of this achievement and look forward to seeing the positive impacts of their research.
