This term, room 5 (Yarta) has read the novel, Black Cockatoo by Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler. It's a short story that features a young Aboriginal girl named Mia, who takes a journey to find her place in this world, her family and culture. Students explored her Jaru culture from north-Western Australia and learnt the Aboriginal English names given to family members and local animals. Interestingly, students learnt about totems, such as Mia's totem animal, the Dirrarn black cockatoo that she rescued. In the process, students focussed on new vocabulary (that they can also use in their own writing), and practised expanding sentences using who, what, when, how and why detail that makes writing more interesting for the reader and or better understanding. Towards the end of this topic, students went on to explore a character analysis of the central character, Mia, and the inferences they could make of her character, based on extracts from the text.
Coupled with this, the class continued with its Kaurna language journey with Uncle Antony. Students reviewed what they have learnt to date from term 1, and heard with interest, how totems are given to an individual based on a notable or special characteristic of the person.
We look forward to continuing our Kaurna language journey with Uncle Antony, and to begin our next class novel, Dirrarn, by the same authors!

At Elizabeth Downs Primary School, we are incredibly grateful for our amazing volunteers who make such a significant impact on our school community. Our kitchen garden program, in particular, thrives because of their dedication and hard work. Without our volunteers, these vital programs simply couldnβt function. We also appreciate the Governing Council members and library volunteers for their efforts in supporting our school as a whole, allowing us to focus on initiatives. Together, we are nurturing not only our garden but also our studentsβ learning experiences! ππ©βπΎβ¨ππ§π½βπΎ
