It’s not your job to rush them. It’s your job to protect the short childhood years in slowness, boredom, curiosity, and deep presence. 💭

What I wish more parents knew:
When your child is dysregulated — yelling, shutting down, lashing out — it’s not because they’re trying to make life harder for you. Often, they’re doing the best they can with the tools they have.
Your child isn’t giving you a hard time — they’re having a hard time.
Underneath every meltdown, shutdown, or outburst is a message:
🔹 “I don’t feel safe.”
🔹 “I don’t know how to say what I need.”
🔹 “I feel overwhelmed.”
Behaviour is communication, and big feelings in little bodies can come out in messy ways.
This doesn’t mean you have to accept all behaviour — it means we start with understanding. You can set boundaries and be compassionate. You can feel frustrated and stay curious.
You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need a way in. When we shift from reacting to listening, we create space for connection, growth, and healing. 🖤

At the McCormick Center for Early Childhood Leadership National Conference for Early Childhood Leaders, our senior director of Professional Innovations, Sarah LeMoine, emphasized a key idea: early childhood education and infant and early childhood mental health are not separate conversations.
These fields are rooted in the same soil: strengths-based perspectives, relationships, culture and emotional well-being. These priorities are interconnected, and when we support them together, everyone benefits.

Your worth as a parent isn't measured by your child's behaviour.
Some days will be harder than others, but your consistent love and presence matter more than any momentary struggle.
