Construction industry giant John Holland is stepping up to challenge the sector’s ‘blokey’ reputation, actively promoting opportunities for women to join – and stay in – the workforce and giving men permission to be a more active part of their families.

Female-focussed parental leave policies can be detrimental to women's careers. When a woman is required to take leave or to go casual or part-time for caring or family responsibilities, it can slow career progression, particularly where management roles are only offered full-time, it can limit lifetime earnings and superannuation savings, or prevent choice to change jobs if a prospective employer has long eligibility periods for parental leave.

Meet Lana and Georgia, two PhD students at AIML who share their thoughts on AI technology and their advice for young women stepping into this industry.

“I knew that I wasn’t necessarily going to know a whole lot about machine learning or know a whole lot about technology, but I had an interest in it… and that’s all you need really.” says Lana, cognitive scientist in AI safety research.

"An incurable optimist, I believe that mathematics and statistics are the building blocks of a brighter future, and I intend to make this vision a reality. After four years enthusiastically studying mathematics and French at the University of Adelaide, I have developed a love for stochastic modelling and data analysis, along with an intercultural perspective which will serve me well ultimately solving problems on a global scale."

During her plant physiology PhD, Dr Na Sai developed StomaAI alongside PhD candidate James Bockman, a new software to fast-track development for water-saving plants.

“It’s not just that you can speed up the analysis, it’s that it also instantly frees you up to change the kinds of experiments you’re doing.” Dr Sai says.
