What Rugby League can learn from a wine brand’s venture into the US market 02/04/2024

Sometimes writing covers material you’d never have put together by yourself….

What Rugby League can learn from a wine brand’s venture into the US market A professor’s job can be seen by outsiders as the career goal of talented educators. However, the teaching role is just one part of an academic’s career responsibilities, and the need to keep informed about contemporary advances in one’s field of expertise is an ongoing motivation. The CSU’s Commitment to Change | CSU 21/01/2024

I’ve never questioned the commitment and contribution that education has on people’s lives. As a professor at Sonoma State University since 2015, I thought I was coming to what I hoped would be a legacy move in my career. To now find myself preparing alongside my system-wide colleagues for the I’m questioning the institution’s priorities after Administration was castigated by findings in last July’s Cozen and Auditor General’s reports, only to award campus presidents and the new Chancellor raises between 12 and 27% on their base salaries. To rub other employees noses in it even further, management called faculty demands for an increase in professor starting salaries and collective demand for a 12% increase as ā€˜excessive’ and ā€˜fiscally irresponsible’. At the same time, CSU management described ā€˜necessary’ increases as they voted to hike student tuition rates up by an accumulated 34% in the next five years, and ā€˜modest’ parking fee hikes of 15%. For the record, the voted against both of those increases.

So when wondering why called for the first-ever, CSU systemwide strike for Jan 22-26, the above explanation should be top of mind.

CSU Management seem to consider their much greater cost increases as reasonable, but others’ much lower increases as unreasonable. The term for using one scale for yourself but another scale for others is known as injustice. It’s impossible to negotiate a fair and equitable contract when one side is changing their position based on their own perspective, while ignoring yours.

With local support from Senator Bill Dodd and Congresswoman Katie Porter for faculty to be paid a wage that can support them in the communities in which they live, let’s call on every member of SSU Faculty helping Faculty and SSU Student Life to join the picket line and stop work all week, unless CSU negotiators come back to the bargaining table.

Link here to CSU response to the findings in the Cozen report:

The CSU’s Commitment to Change | CSU To strengthen its systems of care and compliance, in 2022 and 2023 the CSU engaged Cozen O'Connor to conduct a systemwide assessment of its Title IX and Discrimination, Harassment and Retaliation (DHR) programs. The report identifies core observations and recommendations for improvements at both the...
