KEYNOTE: Moving Minds: Applications Across Diverse People + Settings

SPEAKER: ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR BONNIE FURZER
This session explores the power of exercise as a tool for supporting mental and physical health across diverse populations. Drawing on work with the Mental Health and Exercise Group, the presentation will provide an overview of the evolving role of exercise as therapy - highlighting the evidence base, implementation challenges, and practical strategies for success.
Through real-world case studies spanning youth, gender-diverse, and complex clinical groups, the session will unpack how adaptable, inclusive, and strengths-based approaches can make exercise a sustainable part of mental health care. Attendees will gain insights into the barriers and enablers to embedding movement in practice and hear lessons learned from programs that bridge research and community impact showing how exercise is a cornerstone of mental health services.

Physical Activity and Disability: Maximising Benefit through Innovative EP Practice

The role an Accredited Exercise Physiologist can play in working with persons who identify as having a disability is multifaceted and evolving. Improving “Capacity” for the people we work with is considered the bread-and-butter of EP practice, but what does this really mean? Innovation and genuine consideration of the ways in which EP’s can built capacity through use of language, creation of meaningful social roles, dignity of risk, multi-disciplinary practice and careful intervention planning, can ensure capacity building is as meaningful as possible to the individual.

When Exercise Hurts: Clinical Strategies for Safe and Effective Movement in Pain Populations

As we know, Accredited Exercise Physiologists play a crucial role in helping clients manage and overcome chronic pain. This session will firstly aim to examine the current evidence that supports our understanding of chronic pain. Secondly, this session will crucially outline how the research can be applied in a practical setting. Allied health practitioners that specialise in this space, will discuss how we can foster patient engagement and meaningful outcomes, through movement, education, and empowerment. Practical examples will also be used to illustrate how we can apply this knowledge to deliver holistic, person-centered pain management.
