This is a fundamental skill in learning to read and spell. We use a range of activities and strategies to develop this skill in our students.

"Orthographic mapping is the glueing of graphemes to phonemes within words so that the written word is automatically linked to pronunciation and meaning."
Dr Linnea Ehri

Orthographic mapping is a cognitive process of linking phonemes, graphemes and meaning with automaticity... It is NOT a strategy or activity. There are many activities that help develop the orthographic mapping process and we know that repeated practise is the key!

Parents, that masterpiece on your fridge could be prize-winning art! 🚜🎨

Primary school students from Prep to Year 6 are invited to draw a farm safety message for the 2027 Farm Safety Calendar.

It could be staying safe around animals and machinery, keeping watch near water, or remembering sun safety. Turn an important message into a drawing other Queenslanders will see.

Twelve winning entries will feature in the calendar. Each young artist takes home a $250 gift card, and their school receives $500. 🎁

A fun way to fill in time during the school holidays while encouraging children to get creative and share important farm safety messages across Queensland.

⏰ Entries close Monday 31 August 2026.

Less than a month to go!

The 2026 Abercorn Goodwill Games are just around the corner! πŸŽ‰

On Saturday, 13th June, we’ll once again welcome small rural schools from across the district for a fantastic day of athletics and community spirit.

It’s always a highlight on the school calendar, with students competing throughout the day while families and visitors cheer from the sidelines. From the march past and athletics events, to the much-loved box jump and fastest mum and dad race, it’s a true celebration of country school sport.

We’re looking forward to another great day bringing our schools and community together.

πŸ“’ Important cyber safety update for Queensland school communities πŸ“’

You may have seen media reports about a global cyber security incident affecting Canvas, an online learning platform used by educational institutions worldwide.

Canvas is used in Queensland state schools for staff and student training.

Current advice from the third-party provider Instructure is that names, email addresses and school locations for staff and students since 2020 may be implicated.

We have received repeated assurances that financial information and passwords are not at risk.

While investigations continue, one of the most immediate risks is likely to be phishing and scam activity using compromised contact information.

A few practical reminders for staying safe online:
πŸ“± Be cautious of unexpected emails, text messages or phone calls requesting information or urging urgent action.
πŸ”— Avoid clicking suspicious links or downloading attachments unless you can verify the source.
πŸ’» Monitor your accounts for unusual activity.
πŸ”’ Limit sharing personal information, particularly in response to unsolicited contact.

We're continuing to work closely with cyber security authorities and the third-party provider as investigations continue.

We recognise this information may be concerning for staff, students and families. For ongoing updates, support and online safety resources, please visit: https://qed.qld.gov.au/about-us/news-and-media/instructure-cyber-security-update
