🚀 New program in the ecosystem: AI:SPiN is now open for applications!

Is your AI research ready to make an impact beyond the lab? AI:SPiN helps researchers, PhDs and postdocs turn AI-based research into market-ready products and, ultimately, successful spin-offs.

The program is run by INiTS – Vienna’s High-Tech Incubator, together with AI Factory Austria AI:AT, the University of Vienna and other Austrian research institutions.

🎓 Great start to the new semester: TU Welcome Day 2026 is in the books

It was great to meet so many new Master’s and PhD students at this year’s Welcome Day and to welcome them to the new academic year. We were especially glad to see such strong interest in our programs and to have so many insightful conversations.

When the TU Wien rooftop smells like a grill, you know it’s that time again 🔥

Every year, we invite our community to a BBQ that brings together founders who have graduated from our incubator, teams just getting started, mentors, and advisors.

This year also marked a BIG first: the launch of our R&D Venture Fellowship 🚀 It’s a one-year fellowship, with the option to extend, that runs alongside the fellows‘ research. It supports them in pursuing their scientific goals while they build towards a product, raise their technology readiness level (TRL), and find the first partners willing to test the technology in practice.

The warm evening ended with cold drinks and conversations that went late into the night. The photos tell the rest of the story.

More than a program for startups and spin-offs, this is a tight-knit community. September is always special for us as new teams begin their journeys, so stay tuned for what’s next!

🎒Start your new semester right: TU Wien Welcome Days

This year’s Welcome Days will take place on 14-15 September at various TU Wien locations, with first-year students (14 September) receiving all the key information for a successful start to their studies, and Master’s and doctoral candidates (15 September) getting a proper introduction to the new semester.

Both days will be opened by Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Jasmin Gründling-Riener, together with the organizers Kyle Schmude (International Welcome and Engagement Center, IWEC) and Christoph Brunner (Student Support). This will be followed by a keynote address from a TU Wien alumnus/alumna and an information fair in Prechtl Hall.

You can visit booths of all degree programs and service units at TU Wien and ask your questions directly about your studies. Meet us there!

🏆 Use Visual Computing for Good And Win €5,000

The VRVis Visual Computing Award 2027 invites researchers to submit outstanding applied research that combines scientific excellence with real-world impact. It’s open to anyone using Visual Computing to build solutions in areas such as sustainability, health, climate, and responsible technology.

🎤 Award ceremony: 28 January 2027 in Vienna

👏 Chapeau! Another plaque on the wall and may they keep coming!

Co2ol Catalyst is the latest team to graduate from our incubation program after more than two successful years. The spin-off, co-founded by Christian Weilach, Karin Föttinger and Francesco Valentini, is developing a novel catalyst technology that converts industrial CO₂ emissions into methanol, reducing carbon emissions and supporting more sustainable chemical production. 🧪

May this plaque be a reminder of the great journey we shared and just one milestone of many more to come. Can’t wait to see where you go next!

A vibrant semester of studying and innovation lies behind us, time to pause, recharge, and perhaps let one or two bright ideas quietly take shape. Thank you for your interest, your enthusiasm, and the projects we’ve shared along the way.

Behind the scenes, we’re already getting ready for what’s next: preparations for our new incubator batch are underway, with onboarding kicking off in September. So if you’ve got an idea brewing this summer, keep it close as it might just be perfect timing.
