How have your values and attitudes changed during your time abroad?

"Seven months in Paris have changed my perspective. I’m more open-minded and patient. You hear bad things about Paris much more often than good ones. Strangers on the street were very nice and always helpful. The city was also pretty clean.

On the other hand, I’m now more aware of many things I used to take for granted in Austria, such as straightforward bureaucracy and affordable housing.

At the same time, I’ve come to appreciate the French appreciation for culture, debate, and shared meals, and I’m incorporating some of that into my daily life. Interacting with people from very different countries and walks of life has noticeably broadened my idea of what’s “normal.”

The idea of Europe has become more concrete for me: friendships across borders are no longer an abstraction, but a part of my life."

Looking back, what was the biggest challenge you faced while preparing for or during your stay abroad?
"During this stay abroad, one of the biggest challenges was definitely the short notice—I started working just six days after being accepted for the internship and moved in the meantime. Also, in my experience, it’s much harder to get to know other students during an internship because you’re working full-time. That said, I was especially lucky with my two roommates and my coworkers—I highly recommend accepting all invitations to leisure activities. Sports clubs are definitely a good option, too; they often offer discounts for students, though you always have to check whether these apply to international students as well."
