What was it like to study at the host university?
"In general, the structure of the program differs from that of Austrian universities of applied sciences (FHs), as the semester is divided into two halves. In each half, you choose two courses. Similar to an FH, these courses consist of lectures, seminars, labs, PBLs, and assignments (reports, literature reviews, and presentations). Exams take place immediately afterward, and only then do the new courses begin. This means there’s an exam period at the end of October and another at the beginning of January. Exams here at Linköping University last 3–4 hours each. All exams are held at the Valla campus, while lectures and seminars take place at the US campus. On the platform called Lisam (similar to Moodle), you can find all course materials, assignments, grades, etc. There’s also a LiU app with a map feature, which helps you quickly locate all the rooms on campus. Exam results are published via the “Ladok” platform, and you’re always notified by email when new results are posted."

What new skills and qualities have you acquired?
"During my time abroad, I was able to acquire many new skills and further develop existing ones. In particular, my ability to work in a team and my self-confidence have improved significantly, as I often collaborated with other students and handled new situations on my own.
My language skills have also improved, mainly through regular communication in English. In addition, I was able to learn a great deal in my field, for example, while programming a robotic arm and designing and completing a 3D project."

How would you describe the country, the culture, and the recreational activities you experienced during your time abroad?
"Typical American Midwest hospitality, although I spent more time and met up more often with other international students.
The ISU Recreation Center, located right on campus, offers sports facilities for virtually every sport, but especially basketball and volleyball. Be sure to use the break from classes for travel—I went to Chicago and Puerto Rico during spring break and took a road trip to the West Coast to visit the national parks after the semester ended."

How would you describe the internship in Germany?
"Overall, the internship was very well structured. My supervisor and coworkers provided constant support, and there was always someone available to answer my questions. The company’s facilities were well-equipped, which allowed me to work efficiently. In terms of the work itself, I was able to take on exciting and practical tasks and gain valuable experience in the field."

"How have your values and attitudes changed as a result of your time in Mongolia?"
My time abroad has changed my values and attitudes in several ways. I’ve learned to appreciate many things that often seem taken for granted in everyday life, such as good infrastructure, clear organization, and easy mobility.
I’ve also become more open to other cultures and ways of life. The experience showed me how important flexibility, patience, and understanding are when you have to find your way in a new environment.
I’ve also realized how important independence is. I had to solve many situations on my own, especially when it came to organizational challenges. This has made me more confident and helped me develop greater trust in my own abilities.

How would you describe the country, the culture, and the leisure activities you experienced during your time abroad?
"I found the U.S., especially California and the Bay Area, to be very open, international, and diverse. Berkeley itself is strongly shaped by the university: you meet many students, researchers, and international visitors, which creates a very inspiring and open atmosphere. At the same time, many things are different from Austria—for example, supermarkets, transportation, prices, and everyday life in general. But it was precisely these differences that were so exciting and made my stay special.

In my free time, I tried to experience as many new things as possible: new cafés, museums, walks through Berkeley, and trips to San Francisco. The proximity to nature, the coast, and major cities is also a huge advantage. Overall, the culture was very open, curious, and sociable, but at the same time significantly more expensive and, at times, hectic."
