An exhibition by the class of Applied photography and time-based media during the Angewandte festival
Opening on Tuesday, 28.6.
daily 11:00 to 21:00 until Friday, 1.7.
We take a thing, a DINGS, because it’s the annual theme, the THING, the THINGS/DINGS (it was also once called).
We take the thing in front of our lenses: small lenses, big lenses, internal and external ones. We examine, question and evaluate it—as motive and motivation, for an illustration, a translation, a thing—a photo, or more.
Come here you THING, I’ll turn you:
functional, designed, constructed, invented, desirable, ritual, original, commercial, cooperated, trashy, valuable, existential, significant, fake, human, huge, tiny, untouchable, a JOKE
We want to show it in a Dings, in a booklet or exhibition, or both, whatever we envisage for the thing, however well we mean it with the thing.
We are the agents of things—well-meaning, self-serving, obsessed, in love and unreliable.

MATCH!
An Angewandte exhibition at AFA Off Space
The exhibition MATCH! is a collaborative project between the Department of Applied Photography and the Fashion Department of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, focusing on the interdependency of the two fields.
Glitching the idea of glamour and breaking conventional ways of behaving in fashion, the shown works depict garments in multiple ways: glorified, neglected, staged, distorted and rough-handled, they transform into creatures/ beeings/ entities/ bodies, developing their own language translated through photography.

MATCH: ZOZI Edition Playing Cards
As part of 'MATCH - Collaborative project with fashion and photography students, summer semester 2021‘
Inspired by the card game nights during Lockdown, we decided to redesign the "Wizard" playing cards, incorporating the collections of 4 students from the fashion class. The poses and the idea of a continuous background connecting all the cards were directly applied to our version. Additionally, we used houses as a backdrop for each color to further visualize the experience of inclusion. We created an edition of 100 packs of cards that were promoted during the 2021 Applied Festival with an epic card game tournament.

MATCH: Michael Giefing
As part of 'MATCH - Collaborative project with fashion and photography students, summer semester 2021‘
Inspired by Hans Eijkelbooms „People of the Twenty-First Century“ I wanted to see how my identity changes when wearing other peoples favorite outfits. To do so I chose the overly private and exposing setting of facebook mirror selfies (each time in the surrounding of the person I borrowed the outfit from).

MATCH: Marie Haefner + Kaja Busch
As part of 'MATCH - Collaborative project with fashion and photography students, summer semester 2021‘
Kaja Busch‘s collection is about shame in a social and bodily context. After extensive research based on interviews with wo- men and non-binary people the aim was to use commonly known and readable signifiers of shame and turn them into garments. In the end the collection should be something one can reflect on and have an empowering effect that could normalize what is usualy deemed as shameful. Marie Haefner‘s photographic approach for this project is strongly influenced by Rineke Dijkstra‘s Beach Portraits and the way her subjects are portrayed through the poses they take.

The fashion collection was designed by the designer Anastasya Shpagina which found her inspiration in the surrealism art movement and mountain environment. GAZE Alienation. Anna Skuratovski/Lea Sophia Mair + Larissa Falk
As part of 'MATCH - Collaborative project with fashion and photography students, summer semester 2021‘
‘The body is the sum of being and have been being. The lived time is visible and how it was lived’. Marlene Streeruwitz
The collection and our collaborative work evolved out of a personal need to examine and question the fetishization of the female body and its parts.
In our society, women are pushed to constantly question their appearance and themselves through advertising, magazines, television and social media. The exposure of the female body, and how unveiling the skin has historically changed in different cultures are the main topics of Larissa Falks diploma collection „Alienation“ and our photographic approach for creating a visual identity.
Rotating between roles and perspectives of looking and being looked at, we analyze the gaze of others as much as our own – choosing not only to be looked at but to gaze back, representing and reclaiming our own power.

MATCH: Elif Gündüz + Sunae Hwang
As part of 'MATCH - Collaborative project with fashion and photography students, summer semester 2021‘
The collection is dedicated to Sunae Hwang’s Korean roots, reminiscent of the struggles that she had encountered during her school days. The inspiration has started with the kids in uniforms, during her generation.
Sunae Hwang wanted to capture the misfit ones and their suppressed rage & sorrow. This collection is a dedication for” the beautiful struggles'' and the “beautiful endings”.
The collaboration is to emphasize the concept behind the garments, combining collage, digital manipulation techniques and photography.
