The key objective of the Department of Building Construction is to technically support the conceptual and formal renewal of architecture as propelled in the design studios through teaching and research. Building Construction is integrative – that means it is taught as an embedded aspect of architectural design. In this way students acquire technical expertise parallel to design competence.

Five semesters down, one to go before diploma? Here is our Building Construction Integration for students starting their fifth semester.

Based on your genuine interest and what relates to your studio’s brief, you select your own construction topic. The approach begins with a close look at conventional construction techniques before moving towards a more experimental route. Choose your own method through a study of technical publications, material tests or the production of mock-ups. What the assessment covers in the end is how that thinking developed, not just where it lands.

⁨🎥⁩ ⁨As a new academic year approaches, we’re starting the winter semester with a new publication!

“From Coarse to Fine: Investigating Root Growth for Architecture” published in Biotechnology Design, Cambridge University Press.
Research Project: ROOTARCH, Funded by INTRA 2024.

Team: Petra Gruber, Camille Breuil, Andreas Körner, Clemens Preisinger, Damjan Minovski, Dominik Einfalt and Rebekka Waters, together with the project partners: Thomas Speck from the University of Freiburg, Anita Roth-Nebelsick from the State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart and Thubaut Houette from Ceebios.

Biodesign meets Bioengineering ✨🌿

Our visit to the Institute of Materials Chemistry & Research at the University of Vienna sparked discussions about bio-based materials, fabrication, and future possibilities between science and design. Special thanks to Alexander Bismarck and the Polymer and Composite Engineering team for welcoming us and sharing their inspiring work and insights.
