Letzte Woche öffnete die Ausstellung "Spurensuche . Fragmente des griechischen Mittelalters" im der Österreichische Nationalbibliothek ihre Pforten. Dazu wurden die Kuratorinnen, Krystina Kubina und Giulia Rossetto, von Wolfgang Popp für Radio Ö1 interviewt. Die Ausstellung wurde aus Anlass des 25. Internationalen Byzantinistik-Kongresses gestaltet, der in der letzten Augustwoche 2026 in Wien stattfinden wird.

This consists of an extensive introduction, as well as a datababase in various dowloadable formats, where you can search for a large variety of keywords and prayer concerns, and be guided to major printed editions of these prayers.

We hope this will be of interest and use for anyone studying medieval (Christian) and culture.

Our -colleague Mihailo Popović has edited a volume “Wilderness Revisited. Its Essence, Perception, Description and Image in Byzantium and Beyond”. It contains 12 articles and is a bottom-up endeavour based on actual, ongoing research in various academic fields providing expertise and new scholarly results and, thus, enabling meaningful comparisons between different countries, continents and cultures. It is by no means a preconceived concept imposed by somebody, but the embodiment of one of the core visions of the research initiative “Maps of Power” (https://maps-of-power.oeaw.ac.at/). Our starting point is twofold.

On the one hand, we have been inspired by an article of the geographer and environmental historian William Cronon with the title “The Trouble with Wilderness; Or, Getting Back to the Wrong Nature” , who writes, amongst others, on the perception of “Wilderness”. On the other hand, the editor of this volume attended two workshops in Oxford in the years 2023 and 2024 which spurred him to delve deeper into the topic. The volume’s aim is to enrich further discussion in academia and to connect it to the public discourse in Central Europe (but also beyond).

This year, we are honoured to host Margaret Mullett (OBE), Honorary Professorial Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, for a captivating look into the Byzantine imagination.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: Byzantine Hybrids

Professor Mullett will explore the world of Byzantine hybrids, examining the “fantastic beasts” that occupied a unique space in the culture and art of the period. The lecture will be followed by a response from Markéta Kulhánková, Associate Professor at Masaryk University.

Jh.s, die in Salzburg gefunden wurde, und was sie über den Streit um die Christianisierung des Donauraums zwischen Rom und Konstantinopel erzähl - auch aus Anlaß des 25. Internationalen Byzantinistik-Kongresse in Wien im August 2026.
