How does the brain learn to read music?

Before we can read a simple text, the brain needs to build connections:
🔹 Recognize a symbol
🔹 Associate it with a sound
🔹 Integrate it into a sequence
🔹 Understand its meaning within a context.

But music reading comes with an additional challenge: the same sound can be represented by different symbols.

That's why, at Bolognani-Methode, we created Play and Place: a game that transforms musical symbols into a hands-on learning experience.

Touch is the sense with the greatest impact on the brain because it involves around 90% of the body's sensory receptors. This helps information be learned more effectively and more quickly.

Sometimes, it's not about how much you practice—it's about how you practice.

What if rhythm stopped being something students just have to memorize?

With Musical Balance, students discover rhythmic equivalences through experience and play.
A whole note can transform into two half notes… or four quarter notes.

But the question is not only “What is the correct answer?”, but:
✨ How many solutions can I find?
✨ How can I balance the scale?
✨ What happens when I change the time signature?

This game turns abstract concepts into a visual and tangible experience, allowing students to understand rhythm instead of simply memorizing it.

Musical Balance is part of the Bolognani Method game series and is now available in my store. Link in BIO.

Learning the violin or any instrument depends on much more than practice.

Children are often still developing the skills that make learning possible.

Before technique comes a set of much more fundamental abilities that often go unnoticed:
✔️ Finger strength and control
✔️ Precision in small movements
✔️ Finger independence
✔️ Hand-eye coordination
These skills are not taught directly through the instrument, yet they shape the way a child interacts with it.

At Bolognani Methode, we observe these small actions before introducing technique by having children manipulate different objects such as cards, plush toys, tokens, and other materials.

Because those simple activities reveal valuable information about their stage of development.
When these foundational skills are in place, violin learning changes completely: there is more control, greater ease, and less tension.

Because learning only works when development is respected.

Are you a music teacher? 🎶 This is for you: a new way to explore musical scales.
🎲 Scale Lab is a game designed to create and experiment with musical scales in a visual, structured and creative way.

How to play
🎴 1. Draw a card
The card tells you what structure your experimental scale will have.
🎲 2. Roll the dice
The Reactive Note Die and the Atomic Accidental Die determine the starting note and accidental.
🎼 3. Build your scale
Use the board and tokens to build your scale according to the structure shown on the card.
🌎 4. Experiment!

Create more than 1,500 different scales, from pentatonic to octatonic, while exploring structures from different musical cultures.
✨ And the best part? The cards and dice are optional, so the game can be adapted to different ages, levels and educational goals.

🧠 Scale Lab allows students to work on scales while developing cognitive skills, musical exploration and creative thinking.
👧 Recommended from age 5
🎻 For music teachers and music students
🌎 Explore different musical cultures
🧠 A visual and structured approach that can support neurodivergent learners

A new way to train bow hold.

Many violinists struggle with bow hold because their hand becomes tense or because their fingers have not yet developed the necessary mobility.
And this is completely natural: a hand that, until that point, has only manipulated pencils is faced with a new object, with a different shape and function, and needs to learn how to control it.

Arco-Training was developed precisely to support this transition:
✔️ Replica of a violin bow frog
✔️ Ultra-lightweight, only 8 g
✔️ Pocket-sized and easy to carry — practice anywhere
✔️ Visible thumb position
✔️ Tension-free training
✔️ Ideal for small hands
✔️ Suitable for all levels.

It allows musicians to specifically work on hand shape before the bow is introduced into the dynamic balance required for playing.

This creates a more natural and relaxed approach to bow hold.

There is a widespread belief in music education that the more you practice, the better your results will be.
But in reality, that's not always true.

Some students practice consistently, work hard, and stay motivated… yet certain skills still don't improve as they should.

Many students practice for hours with commitment and consistency.

They arrive at their lessons convinced they've worked hard… yet their progress doesn't reflect the effort they've put in.

Not because they haven't practiced, but because there may be factors interfering with their learning that have gone completely unnoticed.

At Bolognani-Methode, we teach educators how to identify these signs. Because sometimes, when progress doesn't come, the answer isn't to practice more, it's to understand what is interfering with the learning process.

One example is the Babkin reflex.
During technically demanding passages, sticking out your tongue, moving your lips, or clenching your jaw can be signs that this primitive reflex is still active.

The involuntary connection between the mouth and the hands can make it harder for the hands to work independently, causing certain movements to require much more effort than necessary.

Recognizing these signs isn't about making excuses. It's about understanding how the brain learns so we can support learning in a more effective way.

Why do some children struggle with bow hold?

Many parents and teachers believe that the correct bow hold is learned simply by practicing a position.
But before that, there is a fundamental skill: fine motor development.

In the first lesson, Bolognani-Methode observes small everyday tasks that provide valuable information about a child’s development:
✔️ Does the child have enough finger strength to open a clothespin using only two fingers?
✔️ Do the fingers have the precision needed to peel off a sticker and place it on a marked spot?
These observations help us understand the developmental stage of each child.

If these skills are not yet developed, at Bolognani-Methode this becomes our first goal. It is the only way to build solid technique on a stable foundation.

Because every child learns differently, and good teaching must recognize what each child needs. 🎻

When a child struggles to hold the bow, we often think they simply need more practice or more corrections.

But before technique comes a fundamental foundation: hand development.

Finger strength, precision, and independence are skills that allow children to build a stable and relaxed bow hold.

That is why, at Bolognani-Methode, we observe small everyday actions that help us understand each child’s development before working directly on technique.

Because every child learns differently, and good teaching starts by understanding what each student needs. ✨

🎻 Arco-Training was created to support this process through play and help develop the skills needed for a more natural and effective bow hold.

Violin and dislexya.

The only way I could keep going was by learning every piece by ear, then standing in front of the music stand and reading only the pitch of the notes, without telling anyone that I didn’t truly understand what I was reading.

What I didn’t know was that my brain was processing information in a different way. Having dyslexia and dyscalculia (affecting language processing and mathematical reasoning) didn’t mean I couldn’t learn music; it meant I needed to find a different way to understand it.

That’s why I created this game: because it transforms abstract mathematical reasoning in rhythm into proportional and visual reasoning, where notes can be seen, compared, and experienced.

Sometimes we don’t need to practice more. We need to discover how our brain processes information best. 🎵

Violin and dislexya
This material is designed for musicians, teachers, and students who feel that rhythm or music reading is a barrier.
Because learning music shouldn’t depend on just one way of teaching.
