designaustria, the interest organization and knowledge centre for design in Austria, first launched the Joseph Binder Award – an international competition with a focus on graphic design and illustration – in 1996. It is named after one of the most outstanding graphic designers and illustrators active in Austria between the two World Wars, who subsequently also revolutionized visual communication i

n the United States. Joseph Binder’s motto was: »In design, everything has a function. Design has a representational function. Design has a communicational function. Design has a motivational function.«

The Joseph Binder Award is held every two years. The entries are assessed by an international jury of experts. Previous jury panels included such recognized authorities as Cordula Alessandri, Lo Breier, Gerd Dumbar, Fons Hickmann, Freda Sack, Stefan Sagmeister, Niklaus Troxler, and Lars Müller. Graphic designers, illustrators, agencies and students enrolled in relevant courses from all over the world are invited to enter their works realized in the last two years.

We are excited to officially kick off the Joseph Binder Award ‘s 17th season. We will be taking a light-hearted look at the shared reality of designers and illustrators – working under pressure, navigating change, expectations and new challenges constantly.

Pressure can be exhausting but it can also spark new ideas. Let’s celebrate the work that has emerged from the past two years: bold ideas, fresh perspectives and outstanding design and illustration.
