GOES-W Convection RGB - 3 September, 21:00 UTC - A tropical cyclone outbreak happened in the eastern Pacific, with three hurricanes, Lowell, Karina and Marie, developing between Hawaii and western Mexico. On 2 September, Hurricane Lowell reached Category 5, while Hurricane Karina reached Category 4, both achieving their maximum intensity. Higher-than-average convective activity is expected in this area due to warm sea-surface temperatures and increased atmospheric instability associated with El Niño. In the Convection RGB, strong convection and small ice particles are shown in yellow, indicating that the most intense convection is located within hurricane eyewalls.

Himawari-8 Full disk AHI WV 6.2 + 7.3 - Wednesday 26th of August, 21 UTC
Typhoon Saudel is moving toward Southeastern China as a category 1 tropical storm. According to forecasts, it will weaken to a tropical storm before making landfall. The water vapour channels show the structure of the weakening typhoon. The eye in the middle of the storm is already disappearing and the rainbands around the storm are becoming weaker and sparser. The storm is still expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to Taiwan and Eastern China over the weekend.

Himawari-9 6.2 μm – 18 August, 11:30 UTC – A tropical low east of Taiwan is struggling to organize while encountering increasing wind shear and dry air en route to the island. However, the system is expected to produce heavy rain and strong winds locally in Taiwan between Wednesday and Thursday. In this color-enhanced water v***r image, dry air is shown in yellow and moist air in blue hues. Clouds are white or shades of green.

FCI Geo Color RGB – 12 August, 18:30 UTC – On 12 August, a total solar eclipse could be seen along a narrow path extending from northern Siberia across Greenland and Iceland to northeastern Portugal and northern Spain. A partial solar eclipse was visible across most of Europe, parts of northern Africa and northern North America. In the satellite image, the Moon’s shadow, cast as it passed between the Sun and Earth, can be seen over Western Europe and the North Atlantic Ocean as a large black area obscuring the view of the Earth’s surface and clouds. The MTG FCI GeoColour RGB shows realistic colours during the day, while at night it combines infrared channels with NASA’s static Black Marble background.

FCI True Color RGB - 5 August 2026, 05:30 UTC
A morning satellite image over northern Italy reveals a widespread haze layer across the Po Valley. Overnight, a temperature inversion associated with stable high-pressure conditions has limited vertical mixing, allowing pollutants and moisture to accumulate near the surface. While air quality across northern Italy is not currently particularly poor, it is worth noting that the low solar elevation during the early morning enhances light scattering, making the haze appear more prominent in visible satellite imagery. Also note the valley fog in the Alps.

FCI Fire Temperature RGB – 12 July, 16:00 UTC – Several active fires can be identified in the MTG Fire Temperature RGB composite across northern and northwestern France. The largest is located south of Paris, in the Forest of Fontainebleau. Under clear sky conditions, the fires appear as bright, radiant flickers on the mostly uniform purple or dark blue land surface. Depending on their temperature, they may appear in shades from red to yellow, or even white when the fire is extremely intense. During the surrounding days, fire activity could also be observed in the United Kingdom and in Spain, where the fires had devastating consequences.
