Maintaining one of our oldest quests in our pilot project ....

We did today a lot of maintenance work - not only digitally, but also in the real world.

we installed a stolen info board
we removed a few branches which had overgrown a QR code
we loosened screws of QR codes to give growing trees more space
we cut back nettles to make an overgrown stop accessible.

Whenever we do this work, we feel a bit like criminals ... our modern societies with their specialized professions have pushed us - and in particular children and youth - into passivity. We have become onlookers who are not anymore allowed to contribute to the maintenance of public spaces.

Its no surprise that some people resort to vandalism. If you can't contribute to a commons, then you show your disapproval through destructive behavior.

The Mobile Campus approach follows David Sobel's place-based learning method and turns children and young adults into urban rangers, who design gamified learning formats and maintain the real world infrastructure.

We need to turn the next generation into active assets of ecosystem regeneration, instead of pushing them out of the labor market through competitive schooling.

On May 22nd, we continued our Homegrown Course together with both our ESC volunteers and short-term volunteers.

In this course we discussed topics such as outdoor learning, gamification, environmental awareness, and how learning can become more meaningful when connected to real places and communities.

Green Steps in Bad Radkersburg for the Mura Calling project.

Last week upper secondary students from four countries explored the Mura water shed along the Austrian–Slovenian border, crossing landscapes, sharing perspectives, and connecting through nature and learning.

Meanwhile, lower secondary and primary students painted Shinto Ema boards, kindergarten children colored stones, and everybody expressed their ideas inspired by the river.

The day ended with a shared late lunch in the Austrian-Slovenian culture center Pavelhaus, followed by reflections and feedback from the children about their short journey along the Mura.

A day of connection, creativity, and cross-border learning along the river.

Green Steps in Furth — Zellergraben Bee-Eater Walk

We explored the beautiful Zellergraben route in Furth and experienced one of the most special nature moments of the season. Walking through vineyards and green hills, we stopped to watch colorful bee-eaters flying above the valley and nesting in the sandy slopes. With binoculars, we could observe them much closer — their bright colors and fast movements were incredible to see in real life.

The walk was peaceful, full of fresh air, birdsong, and quiet conversations along the trail. A perfect day to slow down, connect with nature, and discover another hidden corner of Lower Austria.
