Green Steps connects people with nature. We design and implement experiential activities to increase respect and understanding for Mother Earth. We teach hands-on natural sciences using the outdoors as a playground and laboratory. We provide families, schools and companies with a personalized solution to develop environmental knowledge. Green Steps was born because we felt a need to instill environmental awareness into urban residents and save children from a spreading nature deficit disorder. For a major part of the society, education is almost exclusively based on indoor academics, digital literacy and STEM subjects. Our relationship with the environment is delegated to a dark corner and progressively forgotten.These results in the alienation of the upcoming generations, with little emotional development, low social skills and zero awareness of the environment. However the young ones are going to suffer most of the consequences of the climate crisis. Our Solution

We activate the green spaces of urban and suburban areas for nature connection and reduce the need to travel far away to recharge one’s batteries. We make them more accessible and enjoyable through guided and self-guided routes which teach in a playful manner about our role within a bioregion. Repeated outdoor explorations strengthen communities, build a sense of stewardship, and a new understanding of what is home.

We celebrated the Fall Equinox with a lovely visit to Schulgarten Kagran, hosted by the Österreichische Gartenbau-Gesellschaft (ÖGG)

During a guided tour, we explored the beautiful garden, discovered fascinating plants, and learned more about nature, gardening, and the changing seasons. 🌿🌻

🍂✨ Welcoming the Fall Equinox!

As summer slowly gives way to autumn, the Fall Equinox marks a moment of balance — when day and night are almost equal.

It’s a beautiful reminder to slow down, notice the changes around us, and reconnect with nature. 🍁🌿 From changing leaves to cooler mornings, autumn invites us to observe, explore, and appreciate the rhythms of the natural world.

So whats an Equinox?

An Equinox is the time of year when day and night are nearly equal in length because the Sun is positioned directly above Earth’s equator. 🌍☀️
The Fall Equinox marks the beginning of astronomical autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, when the days gradually become shorter and the nights longer. 🍂

Brauchen westliche Bildungssysteme einen dritten Weg?

Die jüngsten PISA-Ergebnisse sind ernüchternd: Die Leistungen in Mathematik und Lesen sind im OECD-Raum weiter gefallen – auf den niedrigsten Stand seit Beginn der Erhebungen.

Aber was folgt daraus?

Mehr Leistungsdruck und Standardisierung nach dem Vorbild erfolgreicher asiatischer Bildungssysteme, die dem industriellen Bildungssystem eine neue Anziehungskraft verleihen? Oder noch mehr Individualisierung und „Lernen im eigenen Tempo“?

Wir brauchen einen dritten Weg, der Diversität erlaubt, aber gesellschaftliche Kohärenz fördert.

Das Buch „Ortsbezogene Bildung: Klassenzimmer mit Gemeinden verbinden“ macht einen einfachen Vorschlag: „Bringt Bildung zurück in die Nachbarschaft.“

Der amerikanische Pädagoge David Sobel zeigt anhand zahlreicher Praxisbeispiele, wie ortsbezogenes Lernen Schulen, Gemeinden und Umwelt in resilienten Netzwerken verbindet. Die deutschsprachige Ausgabe ergänzt Sobels Ansatz um eine Einordnung in unseren europäischen Bildungskontext – und um eine digitale Infrastruktur, die vernetzte ortsbezogene Bildung skalierbar macht.

Vielleicht liegt die Zukunft der Bildung nicht darin, zwischen mehr Schule und weniger Schule zu wählen, sondern darin, das Klassenzimmer wieder stärker mit dem Leben außerhalb der Schule zu verbinden.

In honor of World Teachers’ Day, we are on a mission to make outdoor learning effortless for educators. Over the last few days, our team visited 30 regional schools to hand-deliver Mobile Campus starter sets—packed with our brand-new Bioregion Passports and project posters to get students exploring!

Our latest cleanup mission brought us along the Traisen to Pottenbrunn, where our team collected 17.6 kg of waste on August 27, 2026.

While the Traisen is a local favorite for locals and crowds from Vienna for cooling off, the waste left behind tells a different story. Beyond typical party and camping leftovers like paper plates, charcoal bags, broken camping chairs, and dangerous broken glass bottles, we observed serious sanitation issues including human excrement, toilet paper, and used diapers scattered near natural swimming spots. Cigarette litter was also widespread, with countless butts and empty packages left throughout the area.

To protect this environment, we recommend installing public toilets alongside large, accessible trash bins at popular swimming spots. Information boards should be erected to highlight the ecosystem damage caused by littering, particularly from toxic cigarette butts, while clearly warning visitors that littering will be fined. Specifically for Pottenbrunn, clear signage must be put up alerting visitors that they are entering a sensitive drinking water reservoir zone (Quellaufstoß).

Let’s protect our local waters together. Respect nature, pack out what you pack in, and leave only footprints.
