On this 7th day of our Advent Calendar, we are happy to introduce Dr Lucy Kinski, postdoctoral research at SCEUS with a focus on parliamentary representation and responsiveness!

We asked her: If you had the opportunity to collaborate with any EU researcher or institute as a holiday present, who/which would it be and why?

Her response was: It would be with the European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS) on transnational representation on the European Parliament elections.

I would also have enjoyed being in conversation and work with Peter Mair, who was theorising the crisis of representation and said many things that turned out to be correct. He was ahead of his time.

Introducing Krampus, Nicolaus' festive sidekick, here to make sure we all stay on the 'nice' list! 🎅👹 Curious about Krampus and in the mood for a fun video? Check it out here: https://buff.ly/3sX1mDk

Krampus
Krampus, a rather unsettling figure, makes appearances during the Advent season in Austria. You can recognize them from afar by the ringing of their cowbells when they traditionally appear on the evening of 5 December, the day before St. Nicholas Day. Legend has it that those who have been good receive presents from St. Nicholas, while those who have not been good are visited by Krampus.

Where to find them?
- Hellbrunner Adventzauber: 01.12.2023, 6 pm
- Gnigler Krampus: 02.12.2023, 7 pm
- Linzer Gasse: 05.12.2023, 5 pm
- Salzburg Christmas market: Children's Krampus run (and St. Nicholas): 06.12.2023, 3:30 pm
- Maxglan: 08.12.2023, 18.00 hrs

We hope you enjoy the exciting discussion (in German) on the Challenges to EU enlargement with Dr Doris Wydra on Thursday! It will pose an excellent topic for Christmas dinner discussions 🇪🇺🎄

Tired of the Christmas market hustle and bustle in the old town? Well, we have found Santa's secret hideout just next to the Edmundsburg! 🎅✨

Dates and atmosphere:
From November 16 to January 7; Monday - Thursday: 16:00-22:00 and Friday - Sunday: 12:00-22:00.

Enjoy a festive Advent atmosphere at St. Peter Stiftskulinarium with beautifully decorated spaces, homemade Glühwein and live music. It's the perfect place to immerse yourself in the holiday spirit.

Location:
It is super close to the Edmundsburg, directly in the inner courtyard of the Stiftkulinarium St. Peter!

From the Toscaninihof you can go directly to the inner courtyards of St. Peter's and take a seat on the cozy woolen blankets after a strenuous day at the university. It is a bit hidden, but that makes it all the more magical!

02/12/2023

We are delighted to welcome EU politics professor and SCEUS Director Ariadna Ripoll Servent to our second day of the Advent Calendar!

The question we asked her was:
In line with your research, what should the EU’s New Year's resolutions be?

The answer:
My first resolution would be to present the upcoming European Parliament elections as yet another fateful election. This way, we may prevent the radical and Eurosceptic forces from claiming too many seats in the plenary. My second resolution would be to stand firm towards populist governments, especially now that the Dutch far-right populists might join the club.

From a scientific point of view, it will be interesting to analyse how it ends and how it would fit into my research. I am currently working with a colleague from Germany on the impact of populist governments on EU policymaking. We argue that they use ‘unpolitics’ in order to break the rules and consensus and just perpetuate crises.

01/12/2023

The family recipe to make Vanille Kipferl is the key to unlocking your inner holiday cheer, and it is as simple as catching snowflakes on your tongue! ❄️🎄

Ingredients:
- 210g butter
- 70g sugar
- 100g grated almonds
- 250g plain flour
- A pinch of salt
- 60g icing sugar
- 2 tablespoons vanilla sugar

Instructions:
1. Put all ingredients except the butter in a bowl
2. Knead everything with butter to a dough
3. Chill the dough
4. Form rolls and make the Kipferl
5. Bake at 160 degrees (fan)
6. Dust the Kipferl with a mixture of icing sugar and vanilla sugar

Happy baking (and eating)!

In this Journal of Common Market Studies article, Prof Dr Ariadna Ripoll Servent and her colleague explore how (nativist) populist governments in the EU impact policymaking on intra-EU refugee redistribution.

Focusing on the Dublin IV negotiations, the research reveals that populist governments diverge from mainstream ones by rejecting decision-making rules, compromise mechanisms, and final solutions, using deadlock to portray the EU as weak. The study highlights the way in which populist governments strategically use ‘unpolitics’ to maintain a crisis state in EU policymaking.

In his long read for EU Law Live, Dr Thibault Martinelli explains the CJEU’s role in the latest developments of the EU’s accession to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). A last hurdle regarding the judicial review of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), the so-called ‘Basket 4’, remains.

The publication explores all the developments, among which two recent proposals and the KS & KD case in front of the CJEU.

The New Curriculum (EUS 2023) will come in force in October 2023 and has a transition period of one year. That means everyone enrolled in EUS at the moment will stay in the Curriculum EUS 2018 and can finish it regularly in that time frame.
After the transition period has passed, everyone will be transferred into the new Curriculum automatically.

The New Curriculum differs from the old one only in a few points, the most important of which is that there is no longer a Master Exam.
Instead there will be more emphasis on the Supervision Seminar in the future incl. presentations of the Thesis there and in the Interdisciplinary Masterseminar. The ECTS-Count of module 7 and the Master Thesis have been altered.

In practice that means to finish EUS you will have to pass all classes and the Master Thesis.
The “old” and “new” courses are, despite the small changes in the ECTS count, equivalent, as is the master thesis - so you will not have any troubles in the transfer from the Curriculum 2018 to the curriculum 2023.

If you want to switch, you need to do that whilst the enrolment deadline is open, so from the beginning of July until the end of October!

To do so, send the following message to the office of admissions using the contact form: https://axapp.sbg.ac.at/ords/f?p=1420:1110:125668521247172::NO:RP,1110

To the office of admissions!

I am a student of the Master Programme European Union Studies (Studienkennzahl 066 809) and would like to change to the new curriculum (version 2023) of the EUS programme please.
With the kind request to take note and adjust.

Dear 3rd Semester students: Choose your case study (plusonline).
Don’t forget: Only ONE out of two, at your choice!

27/09/2023

On October 10, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. CET, in the framework of the AP8 – Active8 & Particip8 project, the European Parliament Simulation will take place online, a great event that will involve students and young people from the 27 European countries in the guise of Members of the European Parliament.

This is a great educational experience that will allow participants to learn, compare and express their ideas.

· LEARN: Participants will learn about the structure of the European Parliament, one of the EU's main institutions, and delve into one of the most important topics on the European political agenda: the fight against climate change.

· COMPARE: meet online with more than 100 students and young people from across Europe.

· ELABORATE: build your own Bill with the support of your parliamentary group, like a real MEP.

· DELIBER: debate and vote on the most effective and well-implemented Bill.

The experience will take place entirely online, using ZOOM, to make it accessible for anyone. The agenda includes many stimulating activities, which will allow participants to fully immerse themselves in the simulation work, interact effectively with other students and young Europeans, and work as a team, drafting and voting on a Bill.

At a particular moment in history, when there is a widening gap between young people and politics, the AP8 project aims to promote moments of discussion, engagement and active citizenship. Through the AP8 project, participants will be able to improve their language and problem-solving skills, their ability to work in teams and make decisions as leaders. Through this experience, their knowledge in legal, social and civic education will also be deepened. Don't miss a unique and unrepeatable opportunity for growth and learning: we look forward to seeing you the 10th of October at 11.00 a.m. CET!

How to participate?

To take part in the European Parliament Simulation, just fill out this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1G3v-1j6ZGC9KtPRvhBY9cPvOX0YFofkZKVCUpBDgyAI/viewform?edit_requested=true
