I thought I would share an amazing experience our current student Alex Ortins had last week while hiking. He was able to see the "Gams" an alpine mountain goat "up close" which is not an everyday experience:
Ingrid,
Just wanted to let you know I am safely off the mountain. I had an amazing time. I started at 3PM on Friday, hiked until midnight and found a small cave which was a very good shelter. I was able to get a fire going and cook some pasta (always a great morale boost to get warm food). I was up at 5am to finish the climb to the summit and was there by 7am just in time to see the sun rise over the mountains. I was the only one at the top until around 8:45am. It was sunny and clear, could not have asked for a more amazing view!
I was checking my map at one point and felt something behind me. I turned around and no more than 15 feet away I had a friend watching me (see pic). I figure this is the animal you were speaking of? I ended up seeing about 6 of them.
I appreciate all your help and I found your warnings very appropriate as this was easily one of the more dangerous hikes I have done. I was well prepared and had no issues, but I would have been in a lot of trouble if I did not have the right gear with me.
Thanks again!
-Alex
PLEASE NOTE:
students should only hike the Untersberg mountain with official mountain guides - NOT ALONE. Alex is an experienced mountain climber, but please always heed our warnings before considering hiking this mountain.

A view from the Kitzsteinhorn mountain
21/08/2013
I recently took a cable car up the Kitzsteinhorn mountain (part of the Hohe Tauern range in the eastern Alps - reaches a height of 3,203 m (10,509 ft) above sea level) and was lucky to encounter the Alphorn Festival during the “Gipfel Klänge Kitzsteinhorn” festivities.
The views are breathtaking . . . if you like to hike, you can do so until mid September!
