International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Salzburg

„...and then I imagined a university where people would be taught how to see.“ - Oskar Kokoschka - www.youtube.com/SummerAcadOfFineArts

The Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts, founded in 1953 by Oskar Kokoschka as the "School of Vision", in Hohensalzburg Fortress, is the oldest of its kind in Europe. Every year, some 300 participants from more than 40 countries attend some 20 courses offered in two fixed locations: Hohensalzburg Fortress and the Kiefer quarry in Fürstenbrunn, as well as in further temporary spaces.

“Unity within the Shadows”, 2023
by Magdalena Jagodzka ( @‌magdalen.ewa )

“The course by Angelo Plesas aimed at exploring the concept of the temple- we tried to redefine the term “temple” so that it could reach beyond its religious connotations and human limitations. My consideration led me to the idea of shadow understood as an egalitarian connector among all material elements - animate and inanimate. I elaborated a workshop, during which invited participants to search for unity with the environment around them through shadows. The shadows that make them anonymous and equal to others - human, nonhumans and objects. The shadows that allow them to experience unity within the dark shapes.

Through the installation I arranged for the Open Studio I wished to recreate the idea of my workshop in the exhibition space. Using abandoned plants, roots, branches and stones, I formed a scene where visitors could play with the shadows”.

"besties 1925-1937", 2023
by Franziska Koch ( )

"They were so poor, they had to share a bed."
When it comes to depictions of LGBTQ+ lovers, art historians are not at a loss for synonyms: Sometimes the partner is the "close confidante", "long-time roommate" or in other cases the "soul mate". My series "besties 1925-1937" deals with this q***r erasure, inspired by paintings and photos of the intimate relationship between the painter Lotte Laserstein (1898-1993) and her muse Traute Rose (1904-1997). The end date 1937 marks the flight of the Jewish Lotte Laserstein from the N**i regime from Berlin to Sweden.

Slide 6-7: Installation view during the Open Studios at the Summer Academy 2023, Fortress Hohensalzburg

The project was developed during the course 'Portraits after Portrait' by Karol Radziszewski ( @‌karolradziszewski ) & Oliver Riedel, Teaching Assistant ( @‌pingtingcomesforfire ). The course took place 31 July–12 August 2023 at the Fortress Hohensalzburg.

OK. oskar: exhibitions
A little throwback for you! On 14 July we had the pleasure to open the exhibition "In Pieces" by the artist Ulrike Müller at the gallery Kunst im Traklhaus. Here some shots of the Vernissage.

Ulrike Müller engages painterly categories such as abstraction and representation, renewing them at the same time. She materially reassembles visual parts sourced from everyday life and her work. 'In Pieces' invites us to consider modernism not as a completed project but rather as a legacy and horizon whose forms recur but can also be shifted and removed.

The exhibitions which were presented at the Galerie Kunst im Traklhaus were part of the programme ‘Ok. oskar: 70 years School of Seeing’, featuring international artists who approach seeing (perceiving) today from a feminist, q***r, non-binary perspective. The programme includes a series of exhibitions, performances, talks, symposia and music events .

Behind the scene of the performance ‘Miss Kosovo’ by Astrit Ismaili which took place at the Zwergelgartenpavillon (Salzburg) on Thursday 17.08.23.

Astrit Ismaili performed as their alter ego “Miss Kosovo”, a fictional figure inspired by Kosovo’s endeavours to be recognised as an independent state. Miss Kosovo, part of Ismaili’s pop operetta MISS, explores the commodification of nature and power relations in connection to war and gender identity issues acting as a testimony of intense bodily experience and transformation.

Deep thanks go to the make-up artist Eva Hauswirt for the amazing make up Astrit performed with!
