International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Salzburg

The Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts, founded in 1953 by Oskar Kokoschka as the "School of Vision", in Hohensalzburg Fortress, is the oldest of its kind in Europe. Every year, some 300 participants from more than 40 countries attend some 20 courses offered in two fixed locations: Hohensalzburg Fortress and the Kiefer quarry in Fürstenbrunn, as well as in further temporary spaces. Well-known artists from all over the world offer courses and workshops focusing on painting, drawing, graphic arts, (stone) sculpture, installation, mixed media, video, photography, performance and curatorial practice. The organisational structure of the Summer Academy makes it possible to react at short notice to current developments in the art world and to exert some influence on the latest trends. MINOR SIGNALS // BIG GARAGE is an intervention by the students of Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts, class of Heinz Riegler (Heinz Riegler )“Minor Signals // Big Trouble”.

Responding to the current Garage Show exhibition at Fünfzigzwanzig, the group works across different formats: collective observation, performances and objects.

MUSIC SETS #3 | FR. 28.08.26 | MAF (Live-Set) & DJ Liser, in cooperation with SCC , are taking over Stadtgalerie Zwergelgarten for another night of boundary-pushing sound and fun 🌀doors open at 9 pm but music starts later!

🎧 MAF a Brooklyn-born, Berlin-based sound artist, curator, DJ, and musician working across performance, installation, and sonic experimentation. His projects—Brother Aten, The Nekoma Void, MA[RIFA, and Black Grain Meditation—move through different registers of sound but remain rooted in a shared impulse: exploring the expanse of what sound can hold, culturally and spiritually. MAF’s most recent electronic release, Fragmented Dystopia, is currently out on Bruk Records, and he is a long-time resident of Halfmoon BK in NYC, as well as a frequent DJ and former resident at Refuge Worldwide in Berlin.

🎧 Liser has been bringing a breath of fresh air to the Salzburg DJ scene for some time now. The multidisciplinary artist & DJ effortlessly plays through eras and genres such as house, funk, hip hop along with special grooves from the most remote corners of the world. Educating the crowd with playful samples and harmonious beats. A sound that not only got her numerous gigs in the city of Mozart, but also her regular broadcast “Good Lis(ten)er” on Hà Nội Community Radio.

An unforgettable night of genre-defying connection. Come by, feel deeply, move freely 💫

Panel Discussion “Art in Times of War and Conflict” | Eythar Gubara, Alina Kleytman, Neda Saeedi and Noit Banai, moderated by Louisa Elderton | 25.08.26, 7 pm | Stadtgalerie Zwergelgarten
What is the role of art in times of war and conflict? How do artistic communities adapt and respond even if an artist’s practice is not explicitly political per se? Are such periods defined by limitations and reduction? What is at stake when conflict shapes practice? To what degree does art matter amid war?

This panel discussion poses such questions to reflect on how art responds, functions and adapts in times of war, conflict, and unrest, and to probe at whether or not art is a mechanism that can help us to find common ground. Artists Eythar Gubara, Alina Kleytman, Neda Saeedi and art historian Noit Banai come together in this talk organised and moderated by Louisa Elderton in collaboration with the Summer Academy to consider these multi-layered complexities.

Sound Performance “Sleep / Health” | Heinz Riegler (Heinz Riegler ) & Jan Leitner (Jan Leitner ) | 18.08.26 from 7:30 pm | Stadtgalerie Zwergelgarten

Originally conceived as a sedative and therapeutic agent, “Sleep Health” was released as a 34-minute LP via Room40 in 2013.

Recorded over several nights during an artist residency on Kabi Kabi country, Australia, the work emerged from a period of insomnia and concern for an ailing family member on the other side of the planet. Its intention was utilitarian: at first to induce sleep, to function as an audio sleeping pill with a tangible purpose. During the process, the recordings were also sent abroad, in the hope that they might offer comfort and relief across the distance, a utopian attempt to provide healing.

Sleep Health is both a personal aid and a long-distance medicinal instrument exploring dream states, rest, slumber, and the fragile desire to feel better.

Heinz Riegler now performs Sleep Health live for the first time in years, in Salzburg, returning the piece to its intended home.

Sound Performance “Truths in the Moment” | Greg Fox (Greg Fox ) featured by Curtis Talwst Santiago (Talwst Santiago ) |TUE. 11.08.26, 7 pm | Stadtgalerie Zwergelgarten

In 2018, Curtis Talwst Santiago was on residency at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn. He posted a photograph from his studio. Greg Fox, drummer, multidisciplinary artist, and longtime mutual admirer, saw the post on his phone and realized he was in the backyard music residency while Santiago was in the main building. He messaged immediately: look out the window. After years of following each other’s work from a distance, they finally met face to face🌟

That chance encounter became a working relationship. On The Gradual Progression, his acclaimed 2017 solo album, Fox invited Santiago to be a featured vocalist. When Santiago asked what he should prepare, Fox asked him to be in the moment, to respond unplanned to what he was hearing. That way of working, spontaneous and responsive, has defined everything they’ve made together since. In 2023, Fox joined Santiago at the Drawing Center for a live drawing and sonic performance within the Of Mythic Worlds exhibition, exploring the metaphysical and the sublime together in real time.

Greg Fox is a drummer and multidisciplinary artist born and based in New York City. He has worked across a wide range of musical contexts and collaborations, known for his work with Liturgy, Zs, and Ben Frost, among many others. His practice extends beyond drumming into composition, sound design, and teaching.

In Salzburg, Fox returns to this way of working with Santiago, drawing on the same intuitions that have guided their collaboration from the beginning.

🎧 Hatica Khalaj, also known as Chadee, is a Munich-based DJ, multidisciplinary artist and curator working at the intersection of sound, storytelling and identity. Blending house, batida, dub, R&B and electronic music, she creates immersive sets shaped by rhythm, emotion and cultural dialogue. As the founder of Native Fruits, she develops exhibitions, films and community experiences that bring together artists, musicians and audiences across disciplines. Across sound, visual art and spatial storytelling, her work bridges contemporary and traditional perspectives while exploring themes of identity, spirituality and life between cultures.

🎧 Johnny/Spirit Guide - a Dancer, DJ and cultural worker from Salzburg in Austria. In 2022 I founded „Nachtmusik“ Collective together with 3 friends, which I left in late 2025. I am extremely interested in the history behind the music I play, and how that shapes the sound itself. As long as a piece of music evokes something in me, I will play it. If you come to any of my sets, expect music that allows for dreaming, shaking, stomping, and most importantly - dancing. The dancefloor is sacred and belongs to the dancers.
