At the 86th conference of the Academy of Management (AOM) in Philadelphia, MCI Professor Yevgen Bogodistov presented  "Teaching in War-Impacted Classrooms: Psychological Issues, Strategies, and Educators' Experience". 🎓🌍

The talk drew on interviews with Ukrainian university instructors who have continued teaching throughout the full-scale invasion, often from shelters, with unstable power and internet, and under direct threat. Extending the Job Demands-Resources model, Yevgen Bogodistov and Amanda Budde-Sung found that under extreme, sustained demands, educators split into two distinct coping patterns: some distanced themselves emotionally from the classroom to survive, while others leaned in - and, unexpectedly, this "approaching" strategy often produced positive effects at the group level, strengthening cohesion among students and colleagues under shared strain.

It's a humbling reminder that resilience in extreme conditions can take different forms - and some of the most effective coping strategies emerge from leaning into connection rather than retreating from it. 🤝

Grateful to everyone who stopped by to discuss the work, and to the instructors whose voices made this research possible.

A Double Win for the BWLO Department 🏆💡
At this year’s Hashtag competition, our department received two out of the three awards.

🥇 First place went to Eugene (Yevgen) Bogodistov, whose self-written and performed student anthem captivated the jury with its creativity, Hashtag spirit, and memorable performance.
🎵 You can listen to it here: https://lnkd.in/dX2p7B4b

🥈 Second place went to Simon Riegler, whose idea to further develop and modernise our student management processes impressed the jury with its practical value for our students and staff.

For the department, the awards are more than just a nice recognition. They demonstrate something we genuinely value about our department: creativity, initiative, and the willingness to contribute beyond our daily responsibilities.

Congratulations to Yevgen and Simon! We look forward to seeing many more great ideas in the future! 🤗

Last week our Head of Department, Christiane Altendorfer, attended the Consumer Culture Theory (CCT) Conference at Kyoto University🇯🇵🗾

This year was a first: the conference took place in Asia.
And honestly, there is no better place than Japan to talk about consumer culture 🏯🎌🍜

Together with Anna Salchner and Sarah Schwarz, she presented their paper “The ‘Art’ of Transforming: Creativity in Transformative Experiences.” Their research looks at how digital nomads use creative practices in their transformative journeys 📝

A great conference. A fascinating country. Plenty of new ideas💡
