Doctoral Programme Atoms, Light, and Molecules

On May 19th Klaus Blaum, Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, Heidelberg, gave a a very interesting DK ALM physics colloquium talk on ‘Precision at the extremes: exploring the standard model with trapped exotic ions’. The pretalk was given by Dasarath Swaraj, group Roland Wester, on ‘Collisional rotational excitation in ion-molecule charge transfer reaction’.

Within the last months the following members of our doctoral programme atoms, light, and molecules defended their thesis and our speaker Roland Wester handed over the DK ALM supplements.
November 11th 2025: Isaac Smith, group Hans Briegel, defended his thesis ‘On preparing and using resource states for measurement-based quantum computation’. After working a few months in Briegel’s group as a postdoc, he moved on to ICFO Barcelona working in the field of quantum information theory as a postdoc.
December 16th 2025: Milena Horvath, group Hanns-Christoph Nägerl. Thesis title: ‘Non-equilibrium dynamics of one dimensional strongly correlated bosons’. Milena is working as a postdoc in Nägerl’s group.
February 2nd 2026: Lukas Deeg, group Gerhard Kirchmair, defended his thesis on ‘Inductively coupled electromechanics utilizing a nonlinear cavity’ and is working as a postdoc in Kirchmair’s group.
CONGRATULATIONS
May 29th 2026: Desislava Atanasova, group Gerhard Kirchmair. Thesis title: ‘Fluxonium as an ancillary qubit for bosonic computation’. Desi has already started a position as a senior quantum engineer at Qilimanjaro in Barcelona. The picture shows Desi wearing her amazing hat alongside her supervisor, Gerhard Kirchmair.
