Hawai‘i/Pacific Basin AHEC Expands “Stop the Bleed” Training Across American Samoa, Reaching Students in Manu‘a

Pago Pago, American Samoa — Ms. Erica Davis, Deputy Director of the Hawai‘i/Pacific Basin Area Health Education Center (AHEC), has continued her year-long mission to equip high school students across the Pacific with lifesaving skills through the nationally recognized “Stop the Bleed” certification program.

In November 2025, Ms. Davis visited American Samoa and successfully certified students at Fa‘asao-Marist High School, Manumalo Academy, Kanana Fou High School, and Tafuna High School. Building on that momentum, her current visit has already reached students at Leone High School, with an additional training scheduled for students at Samoana High School.

A highlight of this visit is the inclusion of Manu‘a High School. During her time in Manu‘a, Ms. Davis provided “Stop the Bleed” certification to all students present on campus. An important milestone in expanding access to critical emergency response training in more remote island communities. In addition to certification, students participated in hands-on workshops in suturing and casting, as well as an engaging disaster triage simulation exercise designed to strengthen real-world emergency response skills.

The “Stop the Bleed” program is a nationwide initiative aimed at empowering individuals to act quickly and effectively in bleeding emergencies before professional help arrives. Uncontrolled bleeding is one of the leading causes of preventable death in trauma situations. By training students in techniques such as applying pressure, packing wounds, and using tourniquets, the program equips young people with the confidence and skills needed to save lives in critical moments. Bringing this certification to high school students across American Samoa not only enhances individual preparedness but also strengthens the overall resilience and safety of the community.

The American Samoa Area Health Education Center (AHEC) remains committed to building a stronger, more prepared local community by investing in youth education, hands-on training, and public health initiatives that create lasting impact across the territory. The program also looks forward to revisiting Manu‘a in the near future to provide American Heart Association CPR/AED certification to all students of Manu‘a High School, further expanding access to essential lifesaving skills.

Students selected for the program will:
• Earn 3 college credits through UH West Oʻahu (HLTH123: Introduction to Clinical Skills)
• Learn patient care, interviewing skills, and healthcare career pathways
• Participate in hands-on skill building and problem-based learning

We had a great time today at the American Samoa State HOSA Conference!

A big fa’afetai tele lava to all the students who stopped by the AHEC Booth and participated in our hands-on health skills activities. Students had the opportunity to practice CPR compressions on both Adult and Infant manikins, learn about airway management using our training manikin, and even dress the part with white coats and stethoscopes while exploring what it feels like to be a healthcare professional.

A special thank you to our partner Paramedic Jonathan Mageo, who demonstrated intubation and shared valuable insights about emergency medical care and careers in the field.

The spotlight of our booth was our 🎧Headset Giveaway, where students tested their knowledge by playing “Guess the Health Career.” Participants who correctly guessed the careers had their names entered into a raffle for a chance to win. 🎉Congratulations to our winners!

We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to HOSA State Advisor Alice Moeolo and the team at DOE-OCI for the invitation to share about AHEC at ASCC and to be part of such an inspiring event. It was a pleasure for our AHEC Director to participate in the conference as a judge for the competitive events, alongside our AHEC Board Chairwoman, Dr. Robin Faumuina-Vasai, who not only served as a judge but also delivered a motivating speech to our Champions of Change.

A special shoutout as well to the Tafuna High School HOSA students who welcomed us when we arrived and generously helped carry our equipment into the venue, and later assisted with breakdown after the event. Your willingness to lend a helping hand truly embodies the spirit of service and teamwork.
