ASCC - Agriculture, Community and Natural Resources Division Providing American Samoa with the latest agriculture, community, and natural resources information.

In 1981 American Samoa Community College (ASCC) was designated a Land Grant College. Federal funds were provided to develop research, instruction, and extension programs in agriculture, family and consumer sciences, forestry, and 4-H youth development. The Land Grant Program is known today as the Agriculture, Community, and Natural Resources (ACNR) Division. ACNR is responsible for the development and implementation of these programs and fulfills the ASCC mission in the area of research and extension in community and natural resources.

A look at today’s outreach efforts with the Mesepa 2nd Ward Relief Society with EFNEP Nutrition Assistants Faavaoa Ielafi and Talimatagi Isaako sharing more information on nutritional practices and recipes that can be sourced locally using our natural resources.

Joining them was Horticulture Research Assistant Jennet Chang-Berquist who also shared more about the program available at ASCC-ACNR, and distributed bush beans, cucumber, eggplants, and mustard green plants ultimately promoting gardening and agriculture as a means of utilizing our natural resources in our everyday lives!

Together, they highlighted the value of growing food locally, preparing nutritious meals, and cultivating healthy habits for families!

🌿 3rd Quarter ASCC-ACNR Extension Mental Wellness Program 🌿

A special thank you to the FCS/EFNEP Programs for coordinating today’s Mental Wellness Program for the ASCC-ACNR Extension team.

Today’s program served as an important reminder to all Extension staff that WE ALL MATTER. 💚 As we continue serving families, youth, farmers, and communities, we must also remember the importance of taking care of ourselves—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Taking time to recharge, support one another, and prioritize our well-being helps us become stronger individuals and a stronger Extension team.

Take care of yourself. Support one another. Remember—you matter. 🌺

Here at the Land Grant Program, we are committed to educating our young learners on the different facets of agriculture. Pictured here is Dr. Pauline McFall’s AGR 152: “Survey of Community and Natural Resources” class gaining hands-on learning experience with our Plant Tissue Culture Lab Manager, Mrs. Emily Ilaoa.

Students had the opportunity to learn more about plant tissue culture and how this innovative agricultural practice can be applied to the knowledge and concepts they learn in the classroom. At ASCC-ACNR, we believe that experiential learning is one of the best ways to teach our young people the value of agriculture, natural resources, and the many opportunities available within these fields.

Through experiences like these, our students are encouraged to explore, ask questions, and connect classroom learning to real-world applications. We are proud to support the next generation of learners and future leaders in agriculture and natural resource management.

As they wrapped up their Youth Summer Camp 2026, ASCC-ACNR had the honor of extending its outreach services to the youth and families of Peteli Church in Leone. Participants had the opportunity to learn more about the programs and services available through ASCC-ACNR, while gaining valuable knowledge about natural resources, environmental stewardship, nutrition and healthy living, agriculture, and community development.

The outreach provided an engaging opportunity for participants to connect with ASCC-ACNR staff, explore the importance of caring for our environment and natural resources, and learn about the many community programs available to the public.

Faafetai tele lava Peteli Church community! We look forward to continuing to strengthen our partnerships with local churches, families, and communities throughout American Samoa!

ASCC-ACNR was pleased to participate in the 1st Annual Pacific Basin Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) Communities Event, hosted by the American Samoa Department of Health. The event provided a valuable opportunity to learn more about MIECHV’s work and the services they provide to families throughout our communities.

We appreciate any opportunity to connect, share ideas, and learn from our community partners in alignment with ASCC-ACNR’s community projects.

Building strong partnerships across agencies allows us to better understand community needs and work together toward healthier, stronger, and more supported families in American Samoa!
