What are the most common mistakes in people sitting for the EILTS general test?

The most common mistakes in the IELTS General Training test are usually not caused by poor English, but by poor exam technique and time management. Here are the biggest ones I see students make:

1. Not answering the question fully

Many candidates write a good essay or letter, but they don’t answer every part of the task. In Writing Task 1 (the letter) and Task 2 (the essay), you must address all bullet points and requirements.

2. Poor time management

Students often spend too much time on one section and rush the rest. In General Training Writing, so manage your time carefully. Take 5 minutes to plan your letter or essay.

3. Writing memorised answers

Examiners can usually identify memorised essays and phrases. Don’t memorise, remember structures instead. Using connectors, inversion, conditionals will increase your marks.

When “ACHE” sounds like /K/

Did you know that “ache” is pronounced /eɪk/, so the CH sounds like a K? This is one of those tricky English pronunciation patterns!
