YOU DON'T NEED TO STRETCH
.
This probably seems like an odd caption to have on a video of me showing you a hip flexor stretch, but read to the end and hear me out. I have a point here.
.
Stretching is a polarizing topic with a lot of myths and misconceptions. First off, stretching does NOT reduce injury risk, is NOT an effective warm up (although if holding a stretch for 30 seconds do or so makes your training positions feel better then go for it), and is NOT a worthwhile treatment for pain or injury. So if you're stretching for those reasons, your time is better spent elsewhere, likely with some weights in your hand.💪🏻
.
Stretching can however help improve range of motion, but not because it's lengthening the tissue. What actually happens is you improve your tolerance to that position and your nervous system lets off the brakes so that you can go further.
.
This has some specific implications. Instead of seeing stretching as this unique thing, just view it as time spent at your end range. If you accumulate exposure there, the body will begin to tolerate it more and let you have more.
.
↔️ So you can stretch to get that exposure or you could just do your training movements to end range and it will open up over time. It's useful, but again not necessary, and the latter has the added benefit of building strength too.
.
So by this point I'm sure it sounds like I think stretching is worthless, but really it just comes down to the person doing it.
.
If you have good mobility, are consistent with your workouts, or don't like stretching, don't do it. You don't have to stretch. Just getting your reps in will take care of you over time.
.
But let's take somebody who's kind of new to this whole fitness thing. Maybe stretching is there first foray into getting some body awareness or that first step into taking care of themselves. I'm all for that.
.
Is it the most effective use of limited time? No, not really. I'll take strength work first any day. But if you have the time and want to do it, there's not really a detriment either. And if it helps you form some good active lifestyle habits, then stretch away my friend. Because I'm all about that life. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
