The Certificate of English for Tourism (C.E.T.) was first established in 2008 to fill a very real need for English within one of the fastest growing service areas in Argentina.
The first candidates for The Certificate of English for Tourism, - all of whom sat at Level One, - numbered exactly 10 and were spread out over the Provinces of San Luis, Córdoba, and Buenos Aires. By 2020, there were over 350 candidates at the three levels, from Tierra del Fuego to the Chaco.
Unlike our On-Demand S.A.F.A.S. Evaluations, C.E.T. 1, 2, & 3 have established programmes and syllabuses. Sample papers and handbooks can be had on request and will be sent to you by email at our expense.
Candidates are evaluated in Reading and Writing Skills (which include translation exercises and text-messaging in English), Listening Comprehension Skills and Oral Skills. At Level Three, the successful candidate must be able to switch in simultaneous translation from English to Spanish, or Portuguese, or French in one of the Oral Sections, and in one section of the Listening Comprehension Evaluation.
Obviously, the three levels of the C.E.T. evaluations have very special glossaries, and the marking of all papers gives special credit to Communicative Skills, fundamental to the needs of International Tourism. It should also be said that candidates need to know something about Tourism and its allied areas.
C.E.T. was designed to be a flexible Evaluation of Specific English, and we saw the need to be flexible in the administration of the exam as well. Your students can take any of the 3 levels of the examination with 35 days notice, and we can hold the exam in your institute or faculty as long as there are a minimum of 10 candidates. There is also an on-line version of the exam for individual candidates who live a long way from any centre. In addition, the regulations for C.E.T. 1, 2, & 3 allow the use of Host Centres. This makes for an especially interesting career possibility for Adult Students, since the programme and syllabus for C.E.T. generally provide for a less restricted approach to teaching, and a more interesting international view of what the English Language has to offer.
For individual students or institutes unable to find specific courses for English for Tourism within an institute’s or language school’s normal programme, we offer on-line courses (which include audio units) for all levels of C.E.T.
Finally, the material used for The Certificate of English for Tourism has great value for the future traveller. This is an aspect of CET which many teaching institutions have already discovered.
