The Travelling English Classroom

Meet (some of) my virtual classroom stars as I see them from their Zoom windows.

The ESL classroom really does travel! (and without the hussle of commuting). It starts out in Buenos Aires in the early morning and then it moves all the way to Vannes in France. Later, you'll find it in Mallorca, Spain and before you know it, it'll be back in Buenos Aires for an hour or two. At around tea time, it'll head north again, this time to Colorado in the USA, where it'll end the day. The classroom also sometimes visits Barcelona in Catalonia and Sydney and Brisbane in Australia, it really can't complain!

Este aula sí que viaja! (y sin necesidad de moverse). Arranca el día en Buenos Aires y después se va hasta Vannes en Francia. Más tarde la encuentran en Mallorca, España y en poco vuelve a Buenos Aires por un rato, antes de tomar rumbo norte otra vez con destino a Colorado en Estados Unidos. Algunas veces también visita Barcelona een Cataluña y Sydney y Brisbane en Australia. ¡No se puede quejar!

El Inglés es una llave que abre las puertas a un mundo de oportunidades, quién no querría tenerla?

EN - when times are good for travelling, volunteering is a great way to do it, especially if you're on a tight budget! It brings you close to people anywhere in the globe and -it goes without saying- it also allows plenty of chances for language practice!

I taught English for a couple of months in the south of Italy, near Naples, some time ago. I did it through and so did two other teachers at the time. The three of us came together at Global Find and had fun teaching Italian students and learning about Italian culture.

The kiddies in the 2nd pic were between 3-5 yo. They didn't speak a word of Spanish and I only knew a few ones in Italian, but we still had two hours of English fun a week!

Types of volunteering jobs go from teaching to gardening with a myriad of other options in between, practically all over the world. Workaway has an annual subscription fee and It helps you connect with other volunteers who'll be in the same area. The good news is that if you choose to travel this way, bed and board will be provided by the host at no cost, of course!

ES - Cuando los tiempos son propicios para viajar, irse de voluntari@ es una buena forma de hacerlo, en especial si el presupuesto es ajustado. Te acerca a la gente en cualquier parte del mundo y -está demás decirlo- te da todas las chances de practicar idiomas!

Hace un tiempo, di unos meses de clase en el sur de Italia, cerca de Nápoles. Hice el contacto através de , una plataforma mediante la que podés contactar personas que necesiten voluntarios. En la escuela me encontré con otras dos profes voluntarias y nos divertimos enseñandole inglés a alumnos italianos y aprendiendo un poco de la cultura italiana.

Los niñitos de la segunda foto tenían entre 3 y 5 años. Ni ellos hablaban una palabra de español ni yo manejaba más que algunas palabras en italiano, pero igual nos divertíamos en inglés dos horas a la semana.

Para los voluntariados, la gente busca desde profes de inglés hasta jardineros, en practicamente todo el mundo. La subscripción a la página tiene un costo anual y también sirve para contactarse con otros voluntarios que estén en la misma zona. La buena noticia es que si elegís esta forma de viajar, tenés cama y comida cubiertas, porque de eso se ocupa el anfitrión.

ES - En otras palabras, cuál es tu nivel? Sos un A2, o capaz un B2? Es especialmente importante saberlo a la hora de rendir un examen internacional y la respuesta está en el marco común europeo de referencia para las lenguas. Averigualo!

EN - I took this course in the hope that I would be able to teach my way around the world. As it happened, I only got as far as the first classroom, in the south of Italy. After that, we all know what happened in the world... For the first time in 7 years, I have been forced to stay put and so I was in the need of finding a (virtual) window from which to share the most useful tool I've carried this far with me: English, of course!

Here I'll be sharing resources that have helped me as a student and as a teacher, in the hope that they will help you improve your English, too.

ES - Hice el curso imaginando que así podría recorrer el mundo enseñando. Pero solo llegué al primer destino en el sur de Italia, antes de que el mundo quedara patas arriba... Y por primera vez en 7 años, me tuve que quedar quietecita. Por eso me he visto en la necesidad de crear una ventana (virtual) que me permita compartir la herramienta más útil que llevo cargando todo este tiempo: el inglés, claro!

Aca voy a compartir herramientas que me han ayudado a estudiar y a dar clases, para que, con suerte, también les ayude a ustedes.
