Argentina, memories and the now,

In 1979 in Argentina, I met Kisshomaru 2nd Doshu for the first time.
There was an Embukai at the Teatro Alvear in Buenos Aires. About 500 people lined up before the building opened, surprising the neighbors. It was so full. According to the theater staff, the top floor had not been used for over 20 years, but we needed it that day. Hundreds of people were still unable to enter the building. Even now I can still remember the glad looks on all the members faces. As it was a municipal theater, the rental fees and entrance fees were free. The event was divided into a first half and a second half, with the first half being the job of the local members. I had been preparing since more than a year earlier, but I was still worried and nervous about the results.
The second half, beginning with a lecture from Doshu, continuing with Shibata Sensei’s demonstration, and then ending with Seigo Yamaguchi Shihan’s demonstration made the crowd go wild. That one of the ukes for the event, Tani Sensei, currently employed by Hombu Dojo, had come rushing over from Brazil where he was working at the time made me so happy.
The novel corona virus has had large negative effects even here. The a few days ago, one of the instructors was hospitalized in critical condition the other day, but fortunately they have recovered and returned home. This country is large, and the population is small. In some of the more rural areas, there are zero infected persons. However, gatherings and the like are still prohibited. Compared to Japan, is seems to be more strict here. I hear that the situation in countries like Brazil, Chile, and Peru is pretty difficult. Right now, in all areas you cannot do practice. Many people are looking forward to returning to practice. I heard there was a meeting on Zoom the other day with about 50 people logged in. There is a lot of creative work being done with the internet. And there seems to be a lot of motivation.

アルゼンチン、思い出と今

　1979年、吉祥丸道主御一行が当地アルぜンチンへ初めてお見えになりました。
　ブエノス・アイレス市立アルべアル劇場で演武会を開催しました。開場前から、当日500人ばかりの行列が出来、近隣の人を驚かせ、超満員となり、劇場側によると、最上階はここ20年以上前から 締切られており、それも開放されましたが、数百人が入場出来なかったとのことです。我々会員一同、大喜びした顔を今でも思い出されます。
　市立劇場なので賃料、入場料共無料。催しは第1部と第2部に分け、第1部は当地会員が受け持ちました。一年以上前から準備をしましたが、果たしてどうなるかと不安と緊張の連続でした。
　第2部は先ず、道主の講演で幕を開け、柴田先生の演武、最後に山口清吾師範で超満員の会場を沸かしました。受けの一人に、現在本部道場職員でおられる谷先生が勤務地のブラジルから駆けつけてくださいましたのは幸いでした。
　コロナウイルス、こちらでも大分悪さをしております。先日、指導者の一人が感染し入院、重体になりましたが幸いにも回復し、現在 自宅に帰りました。こちら国土が広く人口が少ないのか、地方では感染者0が殆んどです。しかし集会などは禁止しております。日本よりもこちらの方が厳格のようです。ブラジル、チリ、ぺルーなど現状はなかなか厳しいと聞いております。
　現在全土で稽古は出来ません。稽古を待ち望んでいる者が多数おります。先日、ズームを使って集会(と言えるのでしょうか)50名程集まっていたそうです。インターネツトを利用してそれぞれ工夫してやっております。ヤル気は大いにあるようです。
