It is globally accepted that technology makes life easier. In fact, technological devices are used by everybody to facilitate their daily lives all the time. Nevertheless, football has been reticent to incorporate technology to help referees in football matches and whether it is convenient or not has become a highly controversial issue nowadays. What´s more, some administrators in FIFA are now considering technology as a real option due to its worthy application in other sports such as tennis and rugby. Let us analyze some possible advantages and disadvantages the use of technology in football would bring.
Technology may help the referees to commit fewer mistakes. If there were fewer mistakes, football would be fairer and protests to the referees from coaches, players, fans and journalists would disappear. In addition, injustices provoked by referees are becoming more and more dangerous because fans have smartphones and know extremely fast and easy if their team is being put at a disadvantaged by the referee. Violent fans are used to causing disturbances throwing stones, especially in South America, when there´s an injustice, so incorporating technology in football is a way to protect everybody.
However, what makes football such an exciting game is the fact that it is not predictable and referee´s mistakes are part of it. One relevant aspect is that discussions after a football match are sometimes even more entertaining than the game itself and most of the discussions have to do with controversial plays. Another relevant aspect is that the game would lose rhythm and speed if it had to be stopped to see the replay in a monitor as it is done in tennis and rugby.
In conclusion, football has become the most popular sport around the world without incorporating technology, but it is a very competitive game and the scores are usually tight despite the fact that some teams have so many bigger resources than others. Taking this into account, it is obvious that just one referee’s mistake is enough to change the development and the result of a match. Because of that, football administrators should examine the best way to incorporate technology so as to avoid injustices in match results without altering the game spirit.
