“I can’t remember new vocabulary.”

You’re not alone. It takes time to remember new words. Here are the facts:

1. You (probably) won’t remember a word you just saw or heard one time.

2. We remember new vocabulary with spaced repetition—by hearing or seeing a new word or phrase multiple times over a period of weeks and months. Today, there are reminder apps that can help us with this.

3. We can use pneumonics to help us learn. We can use fun or intense images or sentences to help us remember new words. For example, “The moon is not a spoon” might help someone remember the word “spoon.”

4. We are constantly forgetting or almost forgetting things we do not use regularly. “If you don’t use it, you lose it” is an accurate statement when we are talking about learning a new language.

As usual, regular immersion in your target language is the key.
