🎓 Սա բանավոր պատմության առայժմ միակ դասընթացն է Հայաստանի բուհական համակարգում, որը ղեկավարում է Oral History Matters (OHM) հետազոտական թիմի ղեկավար Հուրիկ Ադդարեանը։

Դասընթացի առանցքում ուսանողների հետազոտական նախագծերն են, որոնք ներկայացվում են ամենատարբեր մեդիա արտահայտչաձևերի միջոցով։ Այս տարի ներկայացված էին յոթ ուշագրավ նախագծեր՝ հիմնված ընտանեկան պատմությունների վրա. 👁️ Ցուցահանդեսը լավագույնս փաստում է, որ բանավոր պատմությունը սոսկ ձայնագրություն չէ. այն ապրող նյութ է: Այստեղ ձայնը վերածվում է պատկերի, իսկ հիշողությունը դառնում է ցուցանմուշ՝ ստեղծելով միջսերնդային կենդանի երկխոսություն ժամանակակից մեդիայի լեզվով։

Recently, our team attended the annual exhibition at the American University of Armenia (AUA) titled “Storying Lives, Narrating Histories: An Oral History Exhibition.”

🎓 This is currently the only oral history course within Armenia’s higher education system, led by Hurik Addarian, head of the Oral History Matters (OHM) research team.

At the core of the course are students’ research projects, presented through diverse media formats. This year featured seven remarkable projects based on family histories: Palma Gevorgyan: "Pape", Mari Margaryan: "The 90’s State of Yola", Lilit Aleksanyan: "Back then...", Arevik Mkrtchyan: "I put all my love in this tolma", Meline Mamikonyan: "It was good, it wasn’t bad", Mariam Dadyan: "The Erkej of that time", Mane Yazichyan: "Hybrid".

👁️ The exhibition powerfully demonstrates that oral history is not merely a recording, it is living material. Here, voice transforms into image, and memory becomes an exhibit, creating a living intergenerational dialogue through the language of contemporary media.

One of the most important features of field ethnographic materials is the conduct and transcription of interviews, which holds fundamental linguistic value. However, transcribing speech requires new principles and digital tools to process and archive it effectively.

🤝 We are pleased to announce that our team is collaborating with CAST - Center of Advanced Software Technologies.

🔍 At the heart of this collaboration is the integration of a speech-to-text tool (https://wav.am/ #/am) into our oral history archiving process.

This tool will enable us to:
Transcribe interviews more rapidly and accurately.
Develop technological solutions specifically for spoken Armenian and regional dialects.
Create innovative approaches for the preservation of endangered linguistic materials.

📖💻 This partnership is built on clear synergy: our team provides the field materials and linguistic expertise, while CAST provides the technological solutions. As a result, the speech-to-text tool is continuously improved, and working with field material becomes more efficient and systematic.

📢 International Summer School – Call for Applications
"Digital Humanities: Under-Resourced Languages and Armenian"

The ANR DALiH “Digitising Armenian Linguistic Heritage” and École nationale des chartes (PSL, Calfa) projects, in collaboration with Crisis and Memory: Digital Oral Histories Laboratory, are launching an international summer school bringing together specialists in Digital Humanities (DH), Natural Language Processing (NLP), linguistics, and related fields.

The program is dedicated to under-resourced languages, with a special emphasis on Armenian and language variation, and will include intensive, hands-on workshops and project-based training.
Program includes:

• Digital corpus creation and management
• Language documentation and speech processing
• Linguistic annotation and interoperability
• NLP/AI in low-resource settings
• Data analysis, dissemination, and sustainability

📍2026 թ. հունվարի 22-24-ին Երևանում տեղի ունեցած «Հետսոցիալիստական հիշողությունը ճգնաժամերի և շահարկումների ժամանակ» խորագիրը կրող MSA-ի PoSoCoMeS աշխատանքային խմբի երրորդ տարեկան համաժողովում իր մասնակցությունն ունեցավ նաև մեր հետազոտական խումբը՝ INALCO-ի և Փարիզի Սորբոն Նուվել համալսարանների մեր լեզվաբան գործընկերների հետ համատեղ միջգիտակարգային պանելային քննարկմամբ։

📄Զեկուցումներից մեկը, որը վերնագրված էր “Կրելով լեզուն, ստեղծելով լոկալությունը․ բռնի տեղահանված արցախցիների նյութական և լեզվական ստրատեգիաները”, ներկայացնում էր խմբի անդամ Գոհար Ստեփանյանը՝ Անահիտ Տօնապետեան-Դեմոպուլոսի հետ համագործակցությամբ։

Հեղինակներն անդրադառնում են նրան, թե ինչպես են Արցախից բերված աֆեկտիվ առարկաները և լեզուն միջնորդավորում «տեղայնության» ստեղծումը՝ տեղի կորստի պայմաններում։

📍On January 22–24, 2026, our research group took part in the third annual MSA PoSoCoMeS conference in Yerevan, “Post-Socialist Memory in Times of Crises and Speculation,” through a joint interdisciplinary panel with linguist colleagues from INALCO and Paris Sorbonne Nouvelle.

📄One of the papers, which was titled “Carrying Language, Producing Locality: Material and Linguistic Strategies of Artsakh Armenians in Displacement",was presented by our group member Gohar Stepanyan, in collaboration with Anaid Donabedian-Demopoulos.

The authors refer to how the affective objects and language brought from Artsakh mediate the creation of “locality” in conditions of loss of place.

🎙️On Infocom’s Hanragit podcast, the authors talked with Anna Sahakyan about their paper, the importance of interdisciplinary research and collaboration, and other important topics.

ՀԱՅ | ENG📍Հունվարի 22-ից 24-ը Երևանում տեղի ունեցավ «Հետսոցիալիստական հիշողությունը ճգնաժամերի և շահարկումների ժամանակ» միջազգային գիտաժողովը։ Վերջին երեք տասնամյակների ընթացքում հետխորհրդային Երևանը ձևավորվել է որպես տեղահանության կենդանի հիշողության տարածք՝ կրկնվող մարդասիրական ճգնաժամերի և դրանց կուտակված հետքերի ներքո։

Գիտաժողովը համախմբել էր շուրջ 130 գիտնականների, որոնք ուսումնասիրում են հետսոցիալիստական հիշողության առանցքային հիմնախնդիրները։ Այս տարվա քննարկումները հատկապես կենտրոնացած էին դավադրապաշտական հիշողության հռետորաբանության, ինչպես նաև Կովկասյան տարածաշրջանին առնչվող հիշողության խնդիրների վրա։

Այս շրջանակում, հունվարի 22-ին, ՀՀ ԳԱԱ Հնագիտության և ազգագրության ինստիտուտի «Ճգնաժամ և հիշողություն․ բանավոր պատմությունների թվանշային լաբորատորիա» ծրագրի թիմը մասնակցեց պանելային քննարկման՝

📍From January 22 to 24, the international conference “Post-Socialist Memory in Times of Crises and Manipulation” took place in Yerevan. Over the past three decades of the post-Soviet era, Yerevan has taken shape as a living memoryscape of displacement, marked by recurrent humanitarian crises and their accumulated traces.

The conference brought together approximately 130 scholars engaged in the study of key issues in post-socialist memory. This year’s discussions were particularly focused on the rhetoric of conspiratorial memory, as well as on memory-related challenges connected to the Caucasus region.

Within this framework, on January 22, the team implementing the “Crisis and Memory: Digital Oral History Laboratory” program of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia participated in the panel discussion entitled “Displaced Languages and Populations in the Context of Crisis-Driven Memory.”

The panel discussion was organized by Pollet Samvelian, Principal Investigator of the "Crisis and Memory: Digital Oral History Laboratory" program (Full Professor of Linguistics at Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris), together with Hasmik Knyazyan (Co-investigator of the program), and program members Gayane Shagoyan and Gohar Stepanyan, in collaboration with linguist colleagues:

— Anaid Donabedian, Full Professor of Armenian Linguistics at INALCO, Chair of Armenian Studies since 1991
— Victoria Khurshudyan, Associate Professor of Armenian Linguistics at INALCO

The panel was dedicated to the analysis of the memory of the 2020 and 2023 wars in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), as well as the forced displacement that followed. Interdisciplinary research was presented through the following papers:

📣 2025 MSA Best Paper Award

We are pleased to announce that the 2025 MSA Best Paper Award has been presented to Hasmik Knyazyan for “Digital Homelands: Facebook as a Grassroots Community Archive in Response to Political Erasure in Artsakh.”

The article shows how displaced Artsakh Armenians have transformed Facebook into a participatory community archive, where everyday digital practices—sharing images, testimonies, and commemorations—resist political erasure and sustain cultural memory. The jury praised the paper for its theoretical sophistication, empirical depth, and contemporary relevance.

🏅 An Honorable Mention was awarded to Simina Dragoș for “Mnemonic Justice by Report: The Constraint of the Radical Political Imagination in Post-1989 Romania,” recognized for its incisive analysis of state-commissioned memory reports.

Նոյեմբերի 5-ին կայացավ «Ճգնաժամ և հիշողություն․ թվանշային բանավոր պատմությունների լաբորատորիա» նախագծի երկրորդ դասախոսությունը՝ նվիրված IBM Research Brazil-ի և Սան Պաուլոյի համալսարանի համատեղ Եգատու թվանշային նախագծին։

Դասախոսությունը վարեց պրոֆեսոր Կլաուդիո Պինհանեսը, ով ներկայացրեց նախագծի նպատակները՝ խթանել Ամազոնի բնիկ լեզուների թվայնացումն ու պահպանությունը արհեստական բանականության գործիքների միջոցով։ Քննարկվեցին նաև համայնքային մասնակցության, էթիկական մոտեցումների և նախագծի ընդլայնման հնարավորությունները։

On November 5, we hosted the second lecture of the project “Crisis and Memory: Digital Oral History Laboratory”, dedicated to the Yegatu Digital Project, a collaboration between IBM Research Brazil and the University of São Paulo.

Professor Claudio Pinhanez shared insights into the project’s mission to promote the digital preservation and use of endangered Indigenous languages in the Amazon through AI-powered tools. The talk also explored community engagement, ethical considerations, and future directions for expanding the project.
