Kokh Par (Կոխ Պար) Jivan Gasparyan

Kokh (կոխ) refers to traditional Armenian wrestling, while par (պար) means dance. This powerful musical form traditionally accompanies the ceremonial entrance of wrestlers and the festive celebrations surrounding wrestling events, bringing together strength, community, and ritual through music and movement.

Recorded and filmed in the 1970s, this rare performance features the incomparable Armenian woodwind master Jivan Gasparyan. Known worldwide for his unique musical voice, expressive phrasing, and unmistakable tonal colors, Gasparyan was one of the greatest masters of Armenian wind instruments.

In this recording, he performs on the traditional Armenian zurna, an instrument renowned for its powerful, penetrating sound and deep connection to Armenian ceremonial and folk traditions. The performance stands as a remarkable document of Armenia’s musical heritage, preserving the artistry, spirit, and virtuosity of a generation of master musicians.

This recording remains a brilliant testament to the rich culture of Armenian woodwind instruments and an invaluable piece of Armenia’s living musical legacy.
