One of the most fascinating examples is 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗷𝗮𝗻'𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀.

Built nearly 2,000 years ago as part of Emperor Trajan's monumental complex, the site has survived centuries of transformation. Today, it is no longer simply an archaeological ruin. It has become an active cultural space where people can experience Roman history through exhibitions, events, and contemporary interpretation.

How do we preserve heritage without turning historic places into frozen monuments?

For decades, the 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗴𝘆𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 in Seoul, South Korea, was hidden beneath concrete and covered by an elevated highway carrying thousands of vehicles every day.

At the time, removing the highway seemed impossible. Many feared it would worsen traffic, hurt local businesses, and create economic disruption.

Yet, the city made a bold decision.

Instead of expanding roads, Seoul removed nearly 6 kilometers of elevated highway and restored the historic stream that had once flowed beneath it.

The result was far more than a beautiful public space.

🌱 Urban temperatures in the surrounding area decreased.
🚶 Millions of residents and visitors gained access to a vibrant pedestrian-friendly destination.
🌍 Biodiversity returned, with fish, birds, and plant species reappearing after years of absence.
📈 Nearby businesses, tourism, and property values experienced significant growth, proving that investing in people and nature can also strengthen local economies.

Cheonggyecheon is now recognized worldwide as one of the most successful examples of 𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, demonstrating that sustainable cities are built by rethinking priorities not simply adding more infrastructure.

Projects like this remind us that the future of our cities depends on bold ideas, interdisciplinary collaboration, and evidence-based research.
