has led teams at Raiffeisen Bank, Intesa Sanpaolo Bank and ProCredit Bank, managing energy, facilities and procurement. Today he is an independent ESG and sustainability expert, a certified Energy Manager and Auditor, and a Certified Sustainability Expert from Austria.

Banks need to understand how climate and environmental factors can hurt a client or a portfolio. That part is no longer optional.

ESG is not a fancy word for "going green".

It stands for three things:

E, Environmental. How climate and environmental factors affect a business.
S, Social. How a company treats its people, communities and customers.
G, Governance. How decisions are made and risks are managed.

For banks, all three matter when assessing a client, a project or a loan. It is not simply about having a sustainability strategy.
It is about understanding how environmental, social and governance factors can create both: RISKS and OPPORTUNITIES.

That is why ESG belongs in credit thinking, not in a separate sustainability folder.

More than you might think.

Imagine a client whose business is hit by extreme weather, rising energy costs or new environmental regulations. Costs go up, assets lose value, cash flow tightens. Repayment gets harder.

That is how a climate problem becomes a credit problem.
