Horizon Media is out with a new study on emoji usage during the pandemic that’s designed to get a better read on shifting emotional trends that words alone might not reveal.

The agency analyzed emoji usage in 28 million Tweets in the U.S. and segmented data by gender and by geography to see what patterns and differences would be revealed during the crisis compared to the pre-pandemic period.

The agency found a shift away from carefree chatter to a more somber mix of gratitude, love, and confusion, as well as some levity, as people process and cope with the new normal brought by the crisis.

The study compared the top 100 emojis used in a sample of general Twitter discussion in 2019 vs. now and found that germs and frustration are now top of mind. People are also now expressing a mix of typically more reflective emotions.

New emojis popping up in the top 100 include “Medical Mask,” “Microbe” and “Angry Face With Symbols.” The symbols suggest expletives to illustrate frustration over the current situation and the handling of it.

Emojis with the biggest increase in usage primarily show a more reflective tone:

“Pleading” (+93%) and Sad (+53%), used primarily by people lamenting over the sad news and what they’ve lost with COVID-19 (sports, foods, etc).

“Prayer Hands” (+50%), to express love, gratitude, and support in a time of crisis

“Woozy” (+33%), a drunk face symbolizing alcohol consumption as a coping mechanism

“Flushed “(+30%): Severity of COVID-19 and government actions are a wake-up call; confusion over how to adjust to our new life, embarrassment over people’s handling of the situation.

Emojis with the biggest decrease in usage largely reveal a shift away from the light-heartedness of carefree chatter:

“Side Eyes” (-50%)

“Fire” (-49%)

American Flag (-40%)

Happy Sunglasses (-21%)

Open-Mouthed Smile (-20%)

According to Bloomberg Businessweek, winning the streaming war has never looked this bad.⠀

● People have been talking about the streaming era for so long that it’s hard to imagine the tipping point just happened. In 2019 the rate of Americans quitting cable went from steady slide to avalanche. TV ratings continued to tumble. The three biggest U.S. entertainment titans made the jump into original streaming video, as did Apple.⠀

● But no major subscription provider generates reliable profits from streaming video. The king, Netflix, has borrowed $13 billion as the cash it spends on programming exceeds the fees it gets from subscribers. (Netflix is profitable on a noncash basis.) Disney says that Hulu, which it took over last year, won’t turn a profit until 2023 or later. HBO Max, which is launching this year, is forecast to be unprofitable through 2024. By most outsiders’ estimates, Disney+, Prime Video from Amazon, CBS All Access, Apple TV+, and YouTube TV aren’t paying for themselves. ⠀

● For now this streaming red ink doesn’t matter. Some companies such as Amazon and Apple care less about profits than selling shoes or smartphones. Plus, there’s no point in trying to maximize profits if a company is going to die in the streaming war.⠀

A single person watching YouTube videos for eight hours a day with no breaks or days off would need more than 16 years to watch all the content posted by just the most popular channels on the platform during a single week, says Pew Research Center. These popular channels – defined as those with at least 250,000 subscribers – posted nearly a quarter-million videos in the first seven days of 2019, totaling 48,486 hours of content. The average video on these channels was roughly 12 minutes long and received 58,358 views during its first week on the site. Altogether, these videos were viewed over 14.2 billion times in their first seven days.

U.S. newspaper circulation has fallen to its lowest level since at least 1940, the earliest year with available data, says Pew Research Center. Total daily newspaper circulation – print and digital combined – was an estimated 28.6 million for weekday and 30.8 million for Sunday in 2018. Facebook's and Twitter's Divergent Ad Policies; Amazon US Ad Revenues to Approach $10 Billion; There's No Such Thing As Bad Press, eMarketer reports

Amazon will earn almost $10 billion in US net digital ad revenues this year, we estimate. That's an increase of more than 33% over 2018, according go ’s prediction.

This represents a downward revision from our previous forecast due to slower-than-expected growth in H1 2019. Earlier this year, estimated Amazon’s ad business would grow by 53% to $11.33 billion.
