Butrint is not only a site to preserve.

It is a site that continues to raise questions.

Across archaeology, conservation, ecology, hydrology, geology, agriculture, heritage management, visitor experience, and community engagement, Butrint opens space for research that can deepen how the site is studied, understood, and protected.

Importantly, it is also a living landscape for surrounding communities—whose knowledge, ways of life, and everyday connection to the place are deeply tied to how Butrint is experienced and cared for. Research here is not only about studying the site, but also about listening to and working with the people who live alongside it.

The READ x BMF Research Grants invite diaspora and resident academics to develop collaborative research projects focused on Butrint National Archaeological Park.

Because every strong research project starts with a question.

A strong research proposal does not need to start with all the answers.

It needs to start with a clear direction.

Before applying for the READ x BMF Research Grants, use this checklist to strengthen your idea:

⬜ Is your research question clear?
⬜ Is your proposal connected to Butrint National Archaeological Park?
⬜ Is your methodology realistic?
⬜ Does the collaboration between diaspora and resident academics make sense?
⬜ Is the contribution of the research clear?

Whether your work connects to archaeology, conservation, ecology, hydrology/geology, agriculture, heritage management, or visitor management, the strongest proposals are the ones that show purpose, relevance, and a realistic path forward.

Butrint is often understood through its historical and archaeological significance. But a site of this scale also raises ongoing questions that go beyond the past.

- How should archaeological knowledge inform future preservation?
- How can visitor experience be developed without weakening the cultural and environmental value of the site?
- How can academic research become useful not only for publications, but for institutions making decisions on the ground?

These are the kinds of questions that make Butrint more than a landmark. They make it a living field of research.

Through the READ Program and Butrint Management Foundation, this open call invites Albanian diaspora academics and resident academics in Albania to develop collaborative research projects connected to Butrint National Archaeological Park.

The aim is not only to fund research, but to support work that can contribute to how Butrint is studied, interpreted, preserved, and managed over time.

This is where academic collaboration becomes practical: diaspora expertise, local knowledge, and site-specific institutional context working toward a shared purpose. 🤝

Eligible academics and institutions are encouraged to review the call guidelines and apply.

Academic networks, departments, and professional communities are also invited to share this opportunity with researchers whose work connects to archaeology, conservation, ecology, hydrology/geology, agriculture, heritage management, or visitor management.
