Today we hosted our Career Guidance Consultation with parents and students to assist them in navigating the subject option selection process. We have representatives from the guidance counselling unit in the Ministry of Education supporting the process to ensure that our students and parents are well-informed to make the best decisions.

One parent, Mrs. April King-Francis noted "This is a very good initiative by the school to have this sit down with parents and children to help pave the way towards a career path. When children have an idea of what they want to become later on in life, they need guidance. This will allow them to keep focus and not stray from their career path".

Wednesday 27th April was World Administration Day and the staff at the PSS took time to show their appreciation for their Adminstrative assistants in recognition for their excellence in duties and student care. This is part of the inicitive implemented by the "we see you" committee to tangibly demonstrate gratitude for the efforts of individuals who contributed to the institution.

PSS had two entries in the MBS PAN Schools Smart Dollar 2022 Recipe Competition

Kennique Thwaites took home the prize for the gluten-free protein bites category with her stuffed cassava balls. The cassava balls - which were stuffed with curried lentils and served with a passion curry sauce - also received an additional prize for being a unique and interesting vegan option.

Jeida Benjamin also prepared a Kaiso Pineapple Melon Punch for the Carnival Mocktail category, winning 1st place among four other judged beverages. The sugar-free fruit and vegetable drink wowed the judges.

PSS World Home Economics Day Write-up

World Home Economics Day was celebrated across the globe today, Monday 21st, 2022. The theme was “Building Resilient Homes and Families”. This theme was quite relevant as climate change along with the global pandemic was placed added pressure on homes and on families.

The Home Economics Department of the Pares Secondary School celebrated this day with a grand display of students’ work from across all three areas of the discipline: Food, Nutrition & Health; Textiles, Clothing & Fashion; Family & Resource Manage.

The main lobby of the school was transformed into an eye catching expo with a welcoming sign created by Mr. E. Hill and Ms. N. Prosper of the Visual Arts department at the school. Family and Resource Management had on display a wide array of floral arrangements, up-cycled hydro-dipped bottle centerpieces and an events planning corner. Textiles, Clothing and Fashion highlighted basic weaving techniques and the process of fibre to fabric along with fabric masks, bags, jewelry and curtains. Food, Nutrition and Health showcased the culinary excellence of the Form Three Food, Nutrition and Health students with Saltfish Patties, Dasheen & Herring Balls, Polenta Chips with Spinach Blue Cheese Dip, Chicken Salad Puffs and Coconut Tarts. Added to that and in keeping with the theme, a convenience food and information display was set up using food commonly used to lessen the time spent preparing meals for families.

On hand to witness the expo were Ministry of Education officials in the persons of Mrs.Denise Mills Education Officer, Secondary Schools and Mrs. Iris-Mae Gumbs, Education Officers - Home Economics. The guests and students alike celebrated the efforts of the children and teachers of the department.

The PSS opened its doors on September 6, 1971 and is still celebrating its 50th anniversary all year long. The observance is among a number of cocurriclar activities the school is undertaking as it seeks to reposition itself for greatness in keeping with its legacy of excellence.

Today, the Medical Benefits Scheme and its partners hosted a School Outreach Program at the Pares Secondary School focused on Childhood Obesity.

This collaborative initiative was held in partnership with the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, Rotary Club of Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda Diabetes Association and the Ministry of Health & The Environment, Antigua and Barbuda. Various screenings and activities to included:

✅ Blood Pressure
✅ Glucose
✅ Cholesterol
✅ Height and Weight
✅ Body Mass Index (BMI)
✅ Nutrition Education and Counselling
✅ Exhibition on 100 years of Insulin
✅ Food Demonstration (Smoothies and Shakes)

Both students and teachers were enchanted by the program and took advantage of this opportunity, one which we hope will encourage healthy eating habits both at work and at play to help prevent obesity through the strategies presented today.

Today was the International Day of Mathematics and our PSS family truly proved that Mathematics is a piece of pie 😎

Our students and Math department participated in a variety of fun mathematical activities in celebration today. Way to go team 🎉🥳

We're so very proud of Ms. Shanahan Gillon who represented PSS so well in the recent Halo Art Competition 🎉

Ms. Gillon is currently a visual arts teacher at PSS and took part in the Royal Drawing School Art Certification Training Course completed in December 2021 and copped the second place prize in the recent competition for her phenomenal artwork.
