Different meanings of 'like'

like
like meaninglike meaning

like verb

(to enjoy something): I like swimming. She likes Mexican food.

(to fine someone pleasant, agreeable, or attractive): I really like Jim. She is nice, you’ll like her.

(to want; wish for): Would you like a cup of tea? You can come with us if you like.



like preposition

(similar to): She looks like her mother. He has a car like mine.

(in the same way as): He eats like a horse. She runs like a deer.

(such as): Animals like clams are very soft. Try to avoid foods like cakes, sweets, and biscuits.



like conjunction (informal)

(in the same way that): No one understands him like she does. Don’t talk to me like you talk to the other.

(as if): Jim acts like he owns this place. It looks like it’s going to rain anytime soon.
