Class I. Marginal tissue contraction does not extend to the mucogengival junction. No loss of bone or soft tissue in the interdental area. This type of retraction can be narrow or wide;

Class II. Marginal tissue contraction extends to or beyond the mucogengival junction. No loss of bone or soft tissue in the interdental area. This type of retraction can be categorized across the broad and narrow;

Class III Marginal tissue contraction extends to or beyond the mucogengival junction. There is loss of bone and soft tissue in the interdental region and dental misposition;

Class IV. Marginal tissue contraction extends to or beyond the mucogengival junction. There is severe bone and tissue loss in the interdental region or severe dental misposition.
