Today I want to share a piece of advice from my experience.

I believe most of you know that one-size-fits-all approach may not be the best way in learning, so I try to work with my students who joined my private TOEFL class or course, ask them questions in private to help. It usually helps both me and students to make progress. However, students should do their part and open-up about their problems in clear way so a teacher can write 'useful' prescriptions. In other words, a teacher is like a doctor and a student is a patient with 'language illness'. A high quality doctor asks you some questions about symptoms of an illness and in certain cases also test your blood, do ultrasound check etc. This is done to diagnose accurately and treat the disease properly. If a doctor's diagnosis is the wrong one, patient's condition may get worse. Similarly if a student gets wrong advice, progress never happens thus resulting students to give up their language studies.

Every day like most TOEFL instructors, I receive several messages from students, yet these learners describe their 'language disease' insufficiently with lack of specificity and clarity. For example:
🔘How can I improve my language skills ? (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing )

🔘Can I get 100+ in a month time preparation?

🔘I studied with books that were written by Kathy and designed by ETS, practiced a lot from TPO's sites, Mock tests etc... but progress never happened, what books do you recommend me?

I am not a physician, so I am not able to give useful prescriptions to such illnesses. However, I have decided to share some keystone habits in language learning which will help all learners. The keystone habits are like drinking more water, eating healthy food or exercising daily which boosts your immune system and helps you stay healthy.

My advice is as follows:

1. Select only one book or source based on your level of English, the material you study should be enough challenging so you learn new things.

Spend an hour on each section with a 5-minute break, 4 hours of study time is more than enough per day. Set specific time, location and place to study.

2. Study 6 days a week if you can, if not at least 3 times a week.

3. Consistency is the KEY TO SUCCESS.

4. Be patient, language learning is a long-term process, not an overnight success.

5. Make the process of learning fun and reward yourself.

6. Make your study plan now and start taking action.
