15 September: Iranian news site – Sedaye Miras – published an article claiming that 12 kilograms of gold artifacts excavated illegally at the Tila Tepe archaeological site, located in Shiberghan province of norther Afghanistan, had entered the Iranian black market in the past 2 months.
Images of the looted artifacts, which included motifs with dragon’s heads and use of turquoise stone, are similar in design to the artifacts held in the Bactrian treasure collection (excavated in the 1978 by Viktor Sarianidi) and, if true, validate concerns that this site continues to be illegally excavated.
22 September, Kabul: Tolo News has quoted Hamdullah Wasiq, deputy of the Taliban Cultural Commission, as stating that ‘the Bactrian Treasure is under the government’s control. It is protected. There is no worry and steps are being taken to protect it.” However, there is no independent confirmation of this statement. The Taliban have previously stated that the smuggling of historic objects was banned and that they would take legal action against those involved in the illegal smuggling of Afghan antiquities.
